The dishes you see on petrol stations are not for satellite TV... for their computer networks I believe.

As for the "private" dishes, be careful as they are illegal in this country (sigh...)... make sure you camouflage them well (have some leafy plants around them), and put them away from public view...

I can understand why there is no competition. Not because of corruption. Anyone can start a competing company but ARSETRO has aledi been established with big customer base and the necessary infrastructure. For a 'competent' competition to jump in and fight for the pie will not be easy and cheap. Remember the time when ARSETRO was charging so much more for the dish and decoder? Now they can literally give you the dish and decoder FOC and earn from the monthly subscription.

And bear in mind that the good programmes has aledi been bought or signed by ARSETRO, so the 'newcomers' would not have much choices of quality programmes to offer as alternatives. So now, if you can come up with a proposal for an alternative station to rival ARSETRO with guaranteed returns in 3 years' time, you can be a very very rich man cos there won't be short of investors.

BTW, is MiTV still around??? I guess with VT behind, it still lacks the competitive edge...

Actually there are more than 500 programme channels around. Check the listing in the United States where there are two major players, namely Direct TV and Dish Network. So they are enough channels to play around.:)

The problems here are 1) getting a license and 2) intensive capital needed. The rich and big boys with experience in this industry do NOT necessarily have the political connection to get the license.

I think honestly, if there is gonna be a new competitor / player in the market, they should invest in the niche market. Yes, go into HDTV. It will probably take ARSETRO another decade to go into HDTV :)

I beg to differ fabs, The rise of ASTRO or ARSETRO or whateverit is you guys call is a lil' political.... What ever happened to mega TV ? they were actually the first to embark unto this venture and they were fighting to get the permits to air these stations, but they never got it. Along comes this big coperation many years later with all the channels included.... hmmm makes you wonder isnt it... as for the price, well astro should start reviewing their air time rates and get more adverts on. This is how they can generate income. they should stop with all their stupid station promo's...

this is a case of the powerful that has secret agreement with the government not to issue license to others to protect ass-tro. nothing is fair. well, the internet can play a level playing field here.

i disconnected asstro last july when they said they have not received my creditcard payment because their "backend" office were away. that's so absurd. but i said as soon as creditcard # is read to them and approved it is deemed as paid. and they slapped me all kinds of charges and threatened me with lawyers's letters but i did not pay.

in january this year they called me up wanting me to return but would "lessen" the charges. i told them i would only renew if there are no conditions and no f&&^*& charges because i told them i could get iptv. they thought for a while and agreed.

there are many choices now... check out joost, singapore iptv will be ready soon...

asstro must know this that consumers have choices. with choices, rates will come down.

arsetro has already secured rights to ESPN, MTV etc.

No matter what other channel you bring, it will be useless and not favorable to the consumer.

time to go borderless GO IPTV!!!!!

btw, arsetro has already teamed up with its mobile "partner" for mobile TV too... grrrr

4:00 pm + Sunday 13/5.

Here I am - watching channel 78 ...
It was raining, lightning, thunderstorm ... everything ...
damn ..... what a way to spend my Sunday ...

hey .. wait a minute ... !! I am watching ARSETRO !!
I did not get 'Service Not Available' ...... :p

Am I dreaming ... ?

It is possible, as the rain clouds may not be thick enough at that particular direction facing the satellite from your home.

I learnt that if you really really aligned the dish till it is very very optimised, it will be harder for the reception to be disrupted by rain.

Damn, were you alone or with someone by your side???:D :D

Noticed my ARSETRO is also performing better when it rains. I now only get 'Service Not Available' during the first few minutes when it starts to rain. I can get clear and stable reception thereafter even though it is pouring.

Maybe it's bright and sunny at the broadcasting center... If my understanding of how-it-works is correct, I deduced that the signals has to come from the ground to the satellite before it gets beamed to your satellite dish... So the signal disruptions would occur if the weather condition is bad between the line-of-sight from the broadcast center to the satellite and from the satellite to your house...

I've fixed up my satelite dish on my own. No matter how I adjust the direction, the reception signal strength as shown on the Astro decoder is never 100% (green bar). What other tricks are there?

The best I can get is around 68%, no matter how I twist and turn the dish. But as long as I can watch ARSETRO, no issues. I have got colleagues who cannot even get a decent signal....

viewfinder, no, you will not be able to get 100%, by optimising it means getting the highest possible reading. Mine's only 74%, on a clear night. Daytime is 73-74%. I have heard of people getting 82% before, but their co-axial cable is so short, basically the dish was just outside the window right behind the decoder. My cable length is approx 10-15 metres long.
