hello bmerboy
where your workshop?
pm me give the location ya!

No offence, but did your old man experience the thrill of driving Alfa before saying that? :)

he's alfa folk ok.. i keep banning his car, and his only excuse is germans bomb alfa factory, germans bomb alfa factory.. he said if not, alfa still the leading company! IF NOT :D

bmerboy, I've been driving Alfa since my first car until I recently switch to E46. My experience is Alfa is not that expensive to maintain if you look after your car sensibly. I think the spares are cheaper than BMW, but I'm talking about original spares of course. OEM and imi spare of course BMW has more, again because of demand. Also there are very good speciallist Alfa mechs out there. And they don't bluff-bluff wan.

is it BMW above Alfa ?

(Romeo car?, Romeo and Juliet?, Playboy car?) it sound like romantic theme lah.

just wondering only ~ jgn marah

You should try some Alfas Zul. Then you will know which you prefer for your needs. Otherwise you won't know.

Don't forget, the Italian make the most sexy cars in the world - Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati. And don't forget your history also - the Germans didn't bomb Italy and the Germans also lost the war :D

Alfa is common man's Ferrari ma... :p

Dear Zul, Alfa has a long, long history. even Ferrari was sort of a spin off from Alfa. Even the badge has a history. The only problems with Alfa's are the small problems like door knob falling, noise from door panels. oil leaks. these are all common problems with the Alfa's. But other than that, BMW cannot give you the same driving experience as an Alfa( I'm talking stock Standard here). Of couse you have to be a CAR Person. The other thing is that BMW parts are in abduntant but Alfa parts are not common. Then again if you want a trouble free, cheap maintenance.... Honda or Toyota, I would have to say

c'mon bro meetoo.. r u sure germans didnt bombed Italy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Romeo

The Alfa factory (converted during wartime to the production of Macchi C.202 Folgore engines) was bombed during World War II, and struggled to return to profitability after the war

http://www.exoticcarrental.com/AlfaHistory.htm

The second World War again brought a virtual halt to car production at Alfa. Partially-assembled production vehicles were put in storage and a few racing and experimental cars were hidden in caves north of Milan. The war was a disaster for Italy and for Alfa. Occupying German troops commandeered part of what remained of the severely damaged factory. The design team worked through the destruction to develop a different kind of Alfa Romeo for the changed Europe that lay ahead.

http://www.alfaromeo.no/historie/1940firma.asp

With Italy's entry into the war, Alfa Romeo encounters all sorts of organizational problems. Supplies become harder and harder to find, and the factories are bombed three times, in 1940, in 1943 and in 1944. The last bombing leads to the halt of almost all production activity at Portello.

my cousin bought a 1965 Alfa GT Jr.. rm3000 just for the body. he then built it up, cost him around rm30000.. first i tot, wat a waste of time+money.. after almost 2 years, the car finally can run. guess what? there was this guy offer him rm70000 for the car! damn.. but the car was nice! i will try to get the pic later and post it ere..

Yes bro.

"After the end of World War II, Alfa Romeo's factory at Portello needed rebuilding because of the damage inflicted by American and British bombing raids."

Also in the same link Zul, you can see how the name Alfa become Alfa Romeo.

"When Romeo purchased ALFA in 1915, there were fears among the remaining management and workers that the company was doomed for extinction. In February 1918, he decided to place his own name next to the well-respected ALFA name on the company's radiator badge, and after 1918 all the firm's cars appeared with 'Alfa Romeo' on the hood."

And at this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari you can see how Ferrari came from Alfa Romeo as rube72 say.

"Enzo Ferrari never intended to produce road cars when he formed Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 as a sponsor for amateur drivers headquartered in Modena. Ferrari prepared and successfully raced various drivers in Alfa Romeo cars until 1938, when he was officially hired by Alfa as head of their racing department.

In 1940, Alfa Romeo was absorbed by the government as part of the war effort. Enzo Ferrari's division was small enough to be unaffected by this. Because he was prohibited by contract from racing for four years, the Scuderia briefly became Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari, which ostensibly produced machine tools and aircraft accessories."

So Zul, both Alfa and BMW very rich in history! But Alfa has more romantic racing genes than BMW ;)

There really isn't an answer to this age old question... it all depends what you're looking for in the car, which specific model of each and condition.

I don't have much else to add to what's already been said and discussed... but from my personal experience, I'd just like to say that if you're gonna have more than one car (at a humble budget) then there should always be room in your life for one of each marque - they will thrill you in different ways on different days... I should know, because I've had 4 bmws and 4 alfas in the past... two of each at any one time and no regrets! :)

Just my tiny 2p.
