This just in...

F1 teams are so impressed with recent results amongst road users of fwd especially in keeping up with rwd cars that some teams are lobbying FIA to allow fwd starting from the 2009 season.

That's certainly an enjoyable car and can be made to perform very well. I have test driven it before and was given the full demo by Ron Lim. You will learn why they call it an Italian Stallion.

Sorry, FWD cars cannot corner. (At the next HPC event, take a good look.) End of story.

Aiya Lee, that's not always correct and as Shaifulo puts it, there are some FWDs (including 156s and other JDMs) that can put things in perspective on track. To say what you said like how you said it can be embarassing unless you're prepared to take the gauntlet to redeem some honor for us? For this reason, can I request Albundy to get ready to drive home this point on track? Also, can someone lend him a RWD NA 3L E90 to take on Redd's 156? That would be a nice duel, indeed.

FYI, redd has replaced the 156 with the Fiat Coupe...

actually, all cars now are engineered to understeer... unless you mod the suspension to counter it... both FWD and RWD have their strenghts and weaknesses.. Unless you have driven both platforms at limits (not beyond) before, all u would have is just paper value. I have whacked both FWD and RWD and they have different characteristic, both excel in different ways. so to say that RWD is superior in all ways would not be true.

If you bring in RWD F1 cars then you would have to bring in FWD Rally cars.. FWD car would fare better against a RWD bcos of the loose surface. And I have spoken to an expat who shared his personal experience with driving on snow. A rwd would get stuck more frequently compared to a fwd.

OK, ok. I concede your point. FWD is better. That's why top performance cars use FWD.

And that includes the return of Alfa to the ranks of Porsches and Ferraris in its halo model, the Alfa 8C Competizione, a lovely looking machine.

alfa-romeo-8c-03.jpg

Let's see....

Impressive stats here...

"Meanwhile the powertrain for the coupe is from Maserati’s own GranTurismo coupe front-mounted, sending drive to the rear wheels via a two-piece driveshaft and a self-locking rear differential."

"With the return of rear-wheel drive the 4.2-liter supercharged V-8 will have somewhere to put its 400 or more horsepower."

Waitaminute... did I read correctly? RWD?

What do I know about cars? My old e36 can't even beat a civil servant when it comes to speed. Ask the Alfa engineers what layout they chose when they want somewhere to put down some hp...

Yeah, it snows quite often around here too. I heard there was a blizzard recently on the Kesas somewhere around bukit jalil... guess that's why single-poster-eddie could not shake the 156, must've been a snow storm. When it snows, I park my old e36 at home, and take my wife's corolla. Safer.

Wait a minute?! Redd has replaced his 156? Why?? That car was lovely and I thought he built it up to perfection! Well, I guess with that, one can get bored and in need of a new project.

You mean the NSX, the last supercar from Honda, was not FWD? Nooo.... get outta here...

Here is the lap times of road cars in Nurburgring. Various hp's are represented. Even the Civic, although not the latest model. Shall we count how many FWD's are here?

I do not have any credentials to attack anything, you flatter me undeservingly. Am just pointing out what the facts, or 'paper value' as you put it, document.

No offense, nice to have a bit of debate that's not political. This forum was getting boring. :smokin:

Nurburgring Miscellaneous lap times of road cars

These lap time were measured under different levels of scrutiny under various conditions, track lengths, drivers and preparation time.

This is what I like... u tickle Lee a little and he will turn all rocks to come up with fact and figure... I just sit back and relax to enjoy the effort. Thanks Lee.. :D

There's a reason for FWD la.

1. car is easier to build.
2. more efficient transfer engine output to wheels, normal day to day drive la. FC also better la.. :D
3. correctly mentioned by Lee, good in slippery road surface like gravel, snow, icy, mud.. :D
4. maximised cabin space which is one plus point to build a "transport" machinery..:D

Even Volvo also get the hang of it building some of their models like 850, V70, T5, S40, S60 with FWD.. :D Can pakai to certain extend la..

F1 cars using FWD? this I want to see.. :D

With high horse power pickup, RWD can be benefited by the additional rear wheel traction due to transfer of gravity to the rear during pickup. FWD will only screech...

Cornering at high speed? AWD or FWD is still the best especially with the traction balancing system like in the xDrive or something.

Dunno how fast u all are driving but for me.. any drive system also good enough la..

I like using RWD because turning radius smaller, lower in maintenance (drive shaft can tahan much longer), stiffer chassis due the propeller shaft trunk thus less body flex and safer car to survive accidents.. :D

Talking about FWD performance, both the Civic Type R (CTR) and Suzuki Swift Sport (SSS) has some very impressive performance figures. Leave the RM199k CTR out, the RM97k SSS manual can trash the 156hp 120i M-Sport on paper with an impressive 0-100 w/ 8.9s and top speed of 215kph.. scary... :( I think cabin space also bigger than the premium car 120i which retailed at RM220k.. :(

Just like between auto and manual... its difficult to get manual car now in Malaysia, seriously, I still enjoy driving Manual a lot... same with FWD vs RWD, high power rear wheel drive car is dangerous for new and inexperience driver. Having said the, low power FWD suit them just nice.. maybe an Alfa.. :D to foster a lesser accident driving community.. :D

holy crap, that price is sweet

This is one very good thing Alfa Romeo has over BMW, much more bang for your bucks.. with some help from poor dealership that does the brand no favors at all.
