Dear sifus,I have this wide screen sat nav on my Jap Spec E39, and I am wondering if I can actually update to the latest firmwares which can be found on the internet?Cheers,Neoh

Does the TV and radio work on your system? I'm under the impression that Japan spec HU cannot listen to local radio, no TV and no GPS even if available factory spec. is this true?

Hi Haywire,
Jap spec radio band stop at 90Mhz. There will be some radio stations you can tune to within this narow bandwidth. In Penang, I can tune to Red FM, one of the more popular stations I think.

TV can also to tune to local stations; i.e. TV1, TV2, TV3, NTV7 and 8tv. But my factory spec don't allow me to watch the TV on the go. You can still here audio, but the blank will turn blue to prevent distracting the driver. I hear there is a solution to disable this but I am having no luck thus far.

GPS is a headache. It won't work at all... I even gotten a copy of the MY map on DVD from a nice forummer here but also cannot work. Gave up and bought myself 5" widescreen garmin Nuvi 1460 for Rm1200. Very good GPS cos by now I have owned 3 gps by Garmin. Contented for now, although if I am also to get a mutimedia interface to fit in to our screen with another Garmin, that would be very nice indeed. One thing to note is that our Sat Nav LCd screen is now considered lower end. You will have trouble seeing the screen if you are wearing sunshades.

Hope I answered your questions! :)

Aiyoh I think we can help each other here...I need that DVD map once I go back to Malaysia..and I can enable your TV on the move..I have the tool for it and have done it for my car. OK?

Hi Haywire,

No prob at all! That is a very nice offer I can't miss out. (Actually I can't wait to take a look at your UDM!) You can try out the MY Map DVD anytime when you back in the country and in Penang.

Once you are back, I would suggest you take your UDM for ECU-remap. Definite increase in HP and torque as well as throttle response, instead of going for sprint boosters as they cost apprx the same here. Bernard from BVO did mine for RM1k+ and I have been very satisfied with it so far!

Cheers!

sprint boosters basically shortens the distance you need to push the pedals...no actual increase in power whatsoever, probably psycholgically power increase since tekan sikit sudah pecut wooo. For me no point.

Will consider ECU remap though..

What year is the DVD map? I dont really use the GPS in the car actually..I have my phone with GPS thats so much easier to use. But its nice to still have that function, and the screen still tells you where you are. Thats what I'm looking for.

Actually, the one I got is a 2007/2008 Nav CD for Malaysia and Singapore. I will burn you one copy as well.

Cheers!

Just wondering bro, since yours is a DVD capable unit, shouldn't it be able to read the Navi Installer in CD format (8 sets i think)? Can give it a try.

Eh? Can ar? Boleh la try.

Now thinking about it, when I did my head unit software update the installation disc was a CD-R. So it probably does work.

And thinking about it again, i DO have a softwate update CD for the head unit, as asked by bro Neoh in his original post! But it is for MkIV...not sure if it fit yours. It is V32.

Japs GPS units is different so it wont work here...u need to change the Navigation Computer unit located in the trunk...for radio you have the option to change to the local receiver type and this is also located in the trunk. You in-dash head unit is just a widescreen display and cassette player...

Hi Haywire,

the CD is supposed to work for MkIV as well. But I'll never know since I can't get it to work. :)

Cheers Bro!

I guess the Malaysian map is not that detailed and can be fitted in a CD then..is it only one CD?

You may have to change the Nav unit to a UK model one. I remember reading about this somewhere when I was doing mine. You can get the Mk 3 which is using a CD-ROM or a MK 4 which is the newer DVD. Both should be plug and play to replace your jap one.

Also your Sat Nav antenna should be in place and you are testing this in an open area. Not in a indoor car park. I once nearly gave up on my GPS because I couldn't get it to work until i realized that I was indoors.

You can get either one from ebay. If you are in KL, why don't you call me up. We can swap our units and see if it works. Then only you make a decission to buy or not.

Good luck.

Hi 525i,

Thank you so much for the offer! Will certainly give you a call when I am KL.

Cheers and good day!

No worries man. Anything to help.

Do you find the conversion worth it? Because in my opinion..the BMW navigation is not that good anyway and not user friendly. I'm looking for the CD purely because I already have it in my car and wished to retain the functionality. Even here in the UK with a detailed map I still use the GPS in my phone when I wanna get somewhere.

If I haven't got it already installed I dont think its worth all the hassle but its only my opinion, but I do understand the frustration associated with having a function in the car but it doesnt work.

In that case, what about getting a Garmin, connect to a multimedia interface like those available for E60s, and have it showing on our factory screens? Do we have anything like that for our E39s?

How do you control it?
