Ade,
I believe I have the same model you are driving my ASC light comes on once but now no more. during the time i did attach the diagnose machine and it state my control unit fault. I did check the price is about what you mentioned. Many of the sifus/gurus also informed me to check on a few thing which is ::
1) the ABS sensor OR
2) the relay AND THEN
3) finally the ASC control unit which is the most expensive of all.

Zoom the pic cause there is number over the relay
87a, 86, 87, 85 & 30
THE ABS CYCLE RELAY, PASTEL ORANGE in color

I saw those on realoem.com....question is where are these located in the e46??

There are only 3 places with relay & fuses. They are:
1) Above the glove box
2) E box in the engine compartment
3) Near the battery at rear trunk

aiyah....just checked...no such relay exist for the e46....apparently they have replaced the relay to a MOSFET IC that lies inside the control unit....sob sob....

Finally after spending 3.3K on a brand new Ori Control unit....the fault is not there. I have the old one with me but looks to me they are using some very customised solenoids that cannot be replaced. They have epoxied the units together and there's no way of taking it apart but to replace the whole damn thing.

Also, a big thank you to Lionel_Koh for recommending me the Kuchai Lama workshop but unfortunately I didn't change the unit there as I was needed out of town urgently so have to change somewhere else.
