all of the above is valid..but do u want to live with a m52 engine which is ten years old and single vanos...perhaps u may consider a late 1999 523i 0r 2000 525i..which i believe is a better buy in terms of a more later engine engine which perhaps exhibit better reliability..no offrence the m52b28 is a brilliant engine but a bit dated...compare to the m54b28 engine..

is the engine that far back in terms of performance compared to the newer e39s?
if not, the price range these days do make it very attractive. i'm assuming of course its the same engine as the e36 328i with the exception of it being in a heavier vehicle.
u reckon a double vanos 523i would whip a single vanos 528i or are they about equal in terms of torque and max power?

i doubt a double vanos 523 will be able to whip the single vanos 528
if u really want to whip a e36 328i u will probably need a 530i late model 2001..m54b30..beautiful..nothing wrong with the m52b28, i drive a e36 328i pretty much ok..but damn its old oledi with single vanos..double vanos would be much juicier...try the 2000 e39 528i with the m52b28tu
