hi all sifu, can any one tell me why alot blue smoke come out from my exhaust when i start my car????? sigh ... is it injector problem?? 523i yr1999 e39

blue smoke means the engine is burning engine oil...

Either piston rings are worn or valve seals needs replacing.. or the cylinder bore worn/scarred.

Hi tcl, what fabian mentioned is true but looking at yr car age maybe it is another thing.
I suspect one of the hoses vacum leak, maybe the breather and make the engine oil goes into the throttle and mixed with the fuel.
Not to worry, not much damage on the pocket or car, just sent to yr mechanic ... don't wait otherwise the engine oil will be flooded in the combustion chamber and the car cannot even start.
Then when you sent to the workshop, the mechanic will saya ' haiiya .... ini kena angkat engine ..... rosak sudah teruk ...

thx for the reply but before this the workshop had overhauled my engine head coz of engine overheat problem is it related to tis issue

No Wonder Its So Hazy!!!

jokes aside, just like fabian stated it could be that your piston rings have worn down but on the other hand, you did mention that its only smokey when you start your car??? and not while driving??

where do u normally go for servicing? or where did u overhaul the engine recently?

I know of at least 5 BMW workshops in Kayu Ara area.. Anyway, it's difficult for us to tell u exactly what's wrong without seeing the car, let alone knowing the history of service...

It oso depends what is the extend of the damage suffered when ur car had the overheating episode. It could be legacy from the overheating or it could be something else.

From the website

Different colors of smoke mean different engine problems.
  • White Smoke-Very dense, white smoke present in vehicle exhaust gases is symptomatic of transmission fluid being sucked into the engine's combustion chamber and burned. This white smoke is not normal and, if present in the exhaust, generally indicates a problem with the transmission modulator valve. This problem can typically be corrected by replacing the modulator valve.
  • Black Smoke-Black smoke is the result of partially-burned gasoline being carried down the exhaust. This unburned fuel is wasteful, expensive, and a carcinogen. Black smoke can usually be eliminated with carburetor or fuel injector repairs.
  • Blue Smoke- Pale, bluish-white smoke is the result of engine lubricating oil being burned in the engine's combustion chamber. The most common causes of blue smoke in the exhaust are worn piston rings or loose valve guides. Both conditions involve major engine repairs to correct. Your mechanic can often diagnose the source of this blue smoke by performing an engine wet/dry compression test.

hi randy realy thx alot very useful for me the info thx thx

TCL.... before you take your engine apart check your diagraphm. A plastic piece underneath your valve cover. this piece of plastic may be broken. It happen to me a couple of weeks ago. The smoke only emits when you start your engine and when you come to a dead stop with you engine on idle. It may not be your piston rings.
