Just wondering which would you 5er guys buy not withstanding the price? Please state the pros and cons.

I wud go for the 530d. Why? That tourque, that torque. Also, fuel is cheaper.

The downside... when refueling. The diesel pumps are usually dirtier.

i've never driven bmw diesel engines yet and i'm not quite sure how it performs. from the figures, it looks very promising and the high torque would sure give you that fun factor ur looking for.

however, i can't stand the smell of diesel. i've tried the new c-class diesel and even with that one, i can still kinda smell it in the cabin. it makes me dizzy and that can be the only reason why i wouldn't get a diesel.

its gotta be the 530d, with almost 500Nm torque, you cant go wrong, and also BMW made better diesel engines than the Merc's although the Mercs are famous for their diesel engine over here. Another, strong point is engine maintenance is virtually nil for diesel but other parts are still subjected to the normal wear and tear.

A close friend has also asked me the similar question few days ago, and to me its pretty simple, wait till May and get the new E90 330i! :D

Yup, that is one main problem with using diesel. The last time I filled at the diesel pump (and no, it was not into my babe), I splashed some of the diesel on my trousers and shoes (yup, I was in my office outfit). When I went for my office meeting later, the other members could smell the diesel. Well, we had a very short meeting then.

But I wud still choose the 530d... that torque figure is intoxicating...

If you do a lot of highway cruising and is a high mileage user, i would go for the diesel. The only reason for not taking the diesel is the low rpm - nothing quite like taking the car to 6,000 + rpm and keep it there........

Ace....

My family doctor - Dr Gendeh - have the same big dilemma a few months back. :D when he wanted to upgrade from E46.

Said to him to go for petrol... How long can the Gomen subsidise the diesel? Then the diesel fuel quality, and 2nd hand pricing of diesels. Malaysia is not West Europe.

The initial tork of diesel is yummy... but the petrol can sustain tork over wider band.

In Malaysia, gibe me petrol.

Well, me thinks when the gomen take away the diesel subsidy, the petrolium companies will to bring in better quality diesel. Because with higher prices, the diesel users will definitely demand for better quality diesel.

true. but when is the big question here. until it happens, i'll stay away from it. you can hardly smell diesel in those countries.

yeah, petrol engines give more usable torque over a wide range of rpms. most people look for max figures, but please don't ignore the range/spread of the curves. i'd go with the petrol.

btw, what's the difference in terms of road tax for the diesel vs. petrol?

Well, I would go with the 530d. With 218hp, there is enough top end to cruise comfortably. Yes, our diesel quality here is low with high impurities but BMW Malaysia has said they have tried running their diesel engines before deciding to bring in their engines here. For a daily driving car, torque is more important than hp! Anyway, for those who are interested, go to AB showroom for a test drive. I personally find those in Sg.Besi to be quite friendly and obliging.

Yup, agree with that.

And what I like about the torque is that is very accessible from even very low rpms. I do not have to wait "all-day" for that kick-in-the-butt feeling. :D

With my current babe, the kick-in-the-butt feeling is "really" felt at around 4k when the VANOS kicks in. A bit too high for my "sedate" style of driving.

yes torque is available but for a limited time. i don't know why they don't have the 0-100 or 100-200 figures in the website. i'd like to make a comparison and i believe the diesel will have higher times than the petrol.

Here you go, the 530i is a tad faster.

The 520i developing maximum output of 125 kW/170 bhp and maximum torque of 210 Nm/155 lb-ft, the 530i with 170 kW/231 bhp and 300 Nm/ 221 lb-ft, both models featuring BMW's unique, silken-smooth bi-VANOS spark ignition engines, and the 530d developing maximum output of 160 kW/218 bhp and maximum torque of 500 Nm/369 lb-ft and powered by BMW's new diesel featuring second-generation common rail technology. All three variants come as standard with a new six-speed manual gearbox, with six-speed automatic being available as an option on all model variants.

The BMW 520i/530d/530i accelerate from 0-100 kilometres in 9.0/7.1/6.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 230/245/250 kilometres/h (143/152/155 mph), with fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle of 9.0/6.9/9.5 litres/100 kilometres (31.3/40.9/29.7 mpg Imp).

Hmmm, 0.2 seconds down on the 0-100kmh run and 5kmh down on top speed compared to the 530i. I can live with that. But look at the consumption.... :D

well
diesel prices invariably is going up with the new introduction of the euro 2 in malaysia.

hey and cost of running is not an issue here with the cars.

first the 530d has an ugly exhaust pipes but has wider tyres.
Engines wise. Hearing a 3 liter diesel car purring vs a straight six petrol 3 liter. Anytime 530i.

Ckd vs Cbu. Anytime cbu. y?? cause the fittings are much tighter and has so far no problems.

Also take note the local models and most of the cbu 530i models plus 530d models do not have dynamic drive. There has been an issue made on this and hell yeah there is a difference but then again depends on the driver in the end.

Only problem is one there only 15 cars in malaysia with the dynamic drive and the only 2004 models and 2005 models are with cartrade. Also this cars come with m suspensions plus the 245 tyres like the 530d. Also this cars were much more thoroughly inspected compared to the normal 530i and till to date has never had a single problem. And if they were to import this model brand new right now would cost more than the standard 530i due to the different chasis requirement of having the dynamic drive plus the m suspensions it is fitted with.

Downside would be that this models are fitted with the more rougher hard seats which are semi automatic. For me i prefer this rather than the comfort seats. Y cause i have no back problems and actually feel more comfortable when driving.

Also the road tax implication is very high for a diesel model.

Also please take note there is like 4 or 5 used 530d sitting at autobavaria sungai besi branch. What does that tell u of demand.

There's gonna be an uprated 231bhp 530d coming soon.

I think so long as the 530d doesn't spew out black smoke, it should be a good buy. But does it spew out black smoke? Is it too early to tell (most 530ds on the road are still quite new, and there aren't that many of them either)?

Thanks dude. Sorry that I just got to reply. Been away.

Never had any experience with diesels, so I just needed to educate myself.

As I mentioned, barring costs(price, fuel, maintenance etc.) which would be better?

It seems it's still quite undecided.

Can torque alone be the deciding factor?

Will diesel quality eventually affect engine?

Is the starightline 6 better than the diesel?

Thanks

dang!! I REALLY want to k now what 500nm feels like!!

I can tell you, 280nm doesn't feel like much.. you just keep wanting more MORE MORE
