What would you guys do if after your purchase your car, you found out that the used car dealer adjusted down the mileage from your car?

Look for a wall and smash your head against it.. :banghead:

Sorry I wasn't helping but its kind of late to ask such question.. the dealer can say when they got the car, it was already like that.. there really is nothing much u can do.

Btw, please proceed to newbie section to intro yourself first.. it customary here..

That's why age is irrelevant. The look/condition is what matter. That why most of the time i don't really care what is the mileage, but if the car itself look/conditon is superb, i'll be impress. You'll notice some car mileage is low and not even a year old but the condition conditon as though it is 10 years old. Just like human.(.He, he, he....)You can judge yourself or bring an expert to inspect it(the car).

:listen:Always look for the service record before firming any deal. A bit of work but BMW can "track" history if one can provide the VIN to them for verification.:top:

Talking about which, i passed by a dealer near the Kg. Tunku mini roundabout. Parked behind the fence was a blue e39. Went over to look around and admire and got him to get the keys. It's a 2002 UK brought in by Naza. So far 1 owner only.He kept saying condition very good and mileage is only 80K+ KM. Based on the looks of the interior, exterior and engine, i could safely say it certainly looked like a low miler and well maintained. Door closing felt close to new. Interior paneling and leather seats looked new and not aged. I told him to crank the engine up and it idled ever so quietly. But when i looked at the instrument cluster mileage (50K+ miles) and next to it, it showed the "sign" of tempered mileage!!! Told him the mileage has been tempered. He said that he got the car as it is with such conditions and he's argument is that the condition of the car speaks for its "low mileage".

I just thought to myself, the original mileage on the car wouldn't have been that high to begin with for it to have such good conditions all over it though someone along the way meddled it to make it look even lower.

I offer my services if you need to check female humans condition vs their age. no charge for my services :D

how do you see if the mileage has been tampered?what are the tell tale signs/signals???

Since we're on this subject, do you know the mileage for brand new cars are also tampered / reset before delivery?

OBC mileage can be reset but it has a master mileage counter that can't be reset and can only be extracted by BMW Diagnostic tools, commonly available from BMW workshop.

That's what I heard.. :D

This is what you get when mileage being tampered. A dot by the mileage counter.

With 'proper' tool to reset, the dot will disappear.

dzuljazz2001 : only if the car is maintained by AB.. other wise, if the previous owners sends to ourside w/s, cannot trace unless u bring the car to w/s and do diagnostic test.

ramsing : i'll check with my car and see if there's adot like what champion says. otherwise, in my opinion, there is no way to tell if the milage has been tempered with unless u do a diagnostic test

zas: i think age is relevant. while some parts go by mileage to wear down other parts go by age eg. oil seals, o-rings,

I think as an official club member, all you need to do is bring the bmw keys to an authorised bmw dealer e.g. AB, Ingress Auto and Sapura, pay them RM80 and they'll tell you what's the actual mileage of the car. It's as simple as plugging the key into a computerised gadget over the counter (maybe in the workshop). It reads the mileage recorded within the chip contained in the keys. Very unlikely that will be tampered with.

In Australia, that's the first thing they'll do when you send your car in for service or routine maintenance. They'll grab your keys, plug it into the gadget and say 'Thank you sir for bringing your car in today. Your mileage is 20,500km....blah blah blah....' This will also prevent the workshop mechanic from taking your car for a drive to Great Ocean Road and back and then reset the mileage to what it was before....hahaha....

Yup exactly the DOT! That's what i saw. When i was surveying for my E39, saw 1 model with the DOT. I just walked away.

Prepare at least 15k to 20k for repairs plus wear & tear. Used BMW are cheap in the market but its not cheap to maintain it. Low mileage or single owner does not mean the car good condition. Where do people dump problematic car?? Car dealer rite? :listen:

i spoke legal person in kpdnhep tribunal and he advised me to file a report against the used car. accordingly, i can claim all my repairs done and going to do (get a quotation)

Here's what is needed to be done
1. Proof of the mileage has been tampered
2. State suffering from this action
3. Gather receipts and quotation
4. File claim
5. Max claim RM 25,000.00

thanks for the tip. does this apply for unregistered cars too? because most if not all unregistered+recond cars come with "adjusted" mileage

Yes u r rite here. it is not tampered. its just a mileage reset done after the PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection) is done. The car usually done sumwhere below 5km (factory-trailer-workshop etc) before it is being reset by d guys doing d PDI. nothing to worry about. it is part of the PDI inspection list to reset it. and also, not all mileage can be reset. if im not mistaken, it can only reset for the 1st 500km only. above than that, when adjusting/tampering the mileage, u will get d small dot beside your odometer reading. hope this helps u guys

last weekend i was over a MSpeed and some guy brought a e46 318ci unregistered from Japan I believe with the car dealers..
when ah meng hooked up the GT1, it showed that the car has already clocked 47k km, but the odo is only like about 19k km or lesser?

anyway, there wasn't any dot on the odo...how come???
