Hi dude's!It's been a while since i've posted anything. Well, here it goes. I need to know what type of engine is good and what is the price.FYI, i own a 520i 12V E34 and the engine got busted, so i decide to change the whole engine but i'm still not sure of which engine to change.I like speed and i like the originality of the bimmer engine sound. But i dislike problematic engines.Anybody?-lolipo-

i guess the 525 24v is the best option.

but i do not know what you mean by problematic engines? no engines are problematic free. I have a 520i 12V and the engine has covered 400k+ kilometers on it and is going great. The car gone through one highway run without water for 10 mins at high speed before i notice massive smoke trailing at the back and had been running for years on a stuffed thermostat that only opens a quarter and only about 2 years back, the gasket finally gave way and it received a top overhaul. The m20b20 engine is extremely strong. It has gone down to johor twice this week with an average speed of 140 -160 and occasionally hitting top speed when the road is clear.

the m20 engines are simpler and cheaper.plunk in an m20b25.i did and the only regret was to not have done it sooner.tops out at 220km/h easy with the ori diff.want speed?get a lower diff...will top out 240km/h easy.i get good acceleration with the ori diff and that suits me fine.it's a hill climber:rock:

Hi moots, may I know which parts are needed for a 1989 e34 m20b20 to m20b25 conversion?(I wish to keep the manual tranny)

thx!

there is an E34 525 24v vanos coming from japan soon,pm me if u r interested

Based on my personal experience - the best engine is the V8 4.0 M60
Torque curve starts from circa 2,000 rpm right to redline.
Very 'docile' when stuck in traffic jam. Available parts (a bit pricey) + quite straight forward to maintain it. Esp if you convert it to manual trans

S38B36 aka M5 engine is a high performance engine. In simple terms - it needs to be driven - hard ... It hates traffic jam (so will u ... !), high maintenance, rare & expensive parts + not many mechanics knows how to fiddle with the M car esp S38B36. Power comes after 4,000 rpm ...

Then again, u can always go with M3 3.0/3.2 engines, M50, M30 or even M20 ...

How deep is the pockets - that will be the questions ...

have you had both in your car before?

how much $$$ will i be looking at for an m60 or s38 engine swap?
you can PM me if you dont want to post on a public forum, my brother is very interested in an engine swap for his 525.
am trying to find some info as to what needs to be changed while doing an engine swap. the car currently has a stock manual transmission.

how reliable would the m60 be? is it hard to find one with an alusil block instead of nikasil?

looking forward to your reply.

Thanks

PS: sorry to hijack this thread

once you join the darkside, u have to train hard in the Jedi Wallet trick. coz the darkside will suck your wallet dry

a m60 swap with the relevant wear n tear parts changed, will be about 20k +/- on the road. then you have to think about the roadtax issue. manuals are a rare species.

S38 if a whole different animal. if u cost everything, u wont be able to sleep at night. Freddy Krueger also will run screaming like a girl..... :D

just stroke/superchage the 2.5. still expensive, but must easier.

I am having both now ...

M60 = spent close to 20K ( i know someone spent less ) auto box.
S38B36 = have spent more than 30K - but car is still not perfect. I expect to spent another 10-15K ...

The other route - Stroke (can ask Pussy or Ramsing) or Supercharge.

Stick to 2.5 upgrade - if you are not the type that spend time at the workshop

thx!

you just need the basic engine block...with the cylinder head intact of crs.the rest can be re used ie both manifold, pwr steeering pump, alternator etc etc...even the ecu but of crs you will not get the 100% output like the real mccoy.the manual tranny bolts right on ...enjoy

thanks for the very informative replies ramsing and 535i!
i thought that a m5 conversion would set me back around 25k but guess i was wrong.

what type of increase in performance am i looking at by stroking the 2.5?
what would the end capacity be? 2.7/2.8?
will reliability be severely compromised?
and most importantly how much $$$?

sorry for the noob questions, not very sure about the technical side of stroking or engine transplants.
