Want to buy E39, any advice?

Hi Forumers,Have always visited this website but have just come around to register as a member. I am interested in purchasing an E39 BMW. I have a very limited budget, and need some advice on the model. I understand that 520i is very underpowered for an E39, so I am looking for either a 523i or 525i. I am reluctant to purchase a 528i because of high road tax costs. Due to budget, I am looking for models within 1997/1998 and possibly 1999 range. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? Cant find anything recent for this model in classifieds. Thanks.

Roadtax for 528i is RM800 more than 523i roadtax, but ohmmmm is big different between them..I own 523i, but if give me a chance, i will go for 528i/530i. Maintenance and FC are almost the same between 523i and 528i

Read up. Lots of info on specifications, problems, etc in understanding the E39. A really good read even for those who already owned it.

Was written on 06/2006 so quite sometime after the E39 was discontinued, so gives some indication of problems of the aged car.

If you're looking at 1997-1999 E39, that would be the 523i and NOT the 525i. 525i only came in 2000 with the facelift M54s.

The other thing is the 523i that came from Japan which is badged as 525i, but actually is a 523i.

hi msian, IMHO, get 528 or 530 if your wallet permits..otherwise get 523i model..am currently using 523i n no major issues so far..thinking to upgrade to higher cc or e60 in the future..its up to you to decide..cheers

Hi, I am actually in the same boat as the TS. Am considering trading my harrier to an e39. A few concerns, how much will the maintenance be? What are the things to look for when viewing a car? Was tempted to call IM for his beautiful e39, but was tight on budget.

This will be a car for my wife.

I'm using 520 2.2 for almost a year now...the power is terribad...everynight and day I wish the 4.4L V8 engine in my car

When I was on 16"....fc is ok ..I can clock 9L/100km ..now on 17" staggered.....15L/100km is norm

I am using 523i uk spec. Now my meter always shows 8.6L/100km or 8.7L/100km. In CNY i traveled to Kedah for 380km and shown 8.1L/100km. Is very lucky i didnt buy the 520i. And 2500cc road tax only about RM800++ but 2200cc already almost reach the road tax of 250cc.

What is the speed for highway?

I only maintained the speed cruising to 110km/h .......if not then is 90 to 110 km/h without cruising.
