My E39 with M54B25 is showing sign require at least top overhaul. Recently stranded due to expansion tank cracked and temp shoot up. Managed to pulled over. After changed, expansion tank, radiator and water pump, I get cylinders misfire during cold start and top hose hardened. Suspected water seep in already. However compression test does not really indicate water gushing out from spark plug housing when cranked. But then, I guess immediate remedy is top overhaul and being told in the region of 3k. Since my mileage just passed 200k km and have to top up engine oil in between service, i have been persuade to do complete overhaul as well. No quotation yet. It makes me thinking might as well I upgrade performance of my engine to at least M54B30. Some suggest maintain M54B25 but use stroker kit way. Some say, if upgrade M54B30, I need to upgrade ECU too. If not engine will be lean. Some say, stoker kit is hassle as need to bore block and performance is comparable with M54B30. I do have limited budget, but advise on best approach and best place to do it is very much welcome.
