I only get this when slowing down fast... after sprited driving. I believe the step box drops to first during this mode (after sprited driving). If you drive normally and gradually slow down to a complete stop it doesnt "clunk"... and it downshifts to gear 2 only during idle. Try it.
E46F,

you've got the problem nailed down to a "T". That's exactly the experience that I am getting. Was not sure how the step box works initially but am getting a better idea now. Have always presumed that it will step down to gear "2" all the time.

Anyways, is there anything that can be done and how come it only affects some of the E46's? Another forummer here "Valkyrie" has a similar problem. But he only gets it when moving from Gear "2" to "3".

Not quite true, E46F. I drive sedately and i still get the "klunk" sound when it shifts to 2nd gear..

Hi Guys,

I get that "thud" sound when I am in stop go traffic. So when I press the accelerator after I just stop/brake then that sound can sometimes be heard but not all the time.

Sounds like something just got unstuck.

After my ATF change the gear changes are smoother and the "thud" sound is much softer but the sound is still there.

I was told that the rear axle bushing or something like that needs to be replaced. From the sound it looks like a mechanical problem or wear and tear to me.

i have changed the rear axle bushing..its not that..the sound still there..this is a design fault in the E46..cannot solve laa..so live with it!!! :(

Hi BMW9700,

Yeah like you said it could be a design fault as in the problem can't be fix at a reasonable cost. It maybe very expensive to fix and the problem will keep on happening after every 2-3 years.

But still there must be a reason why we are getting this problem. It looks like nobody knows exactly what is the "design fault" and what faulty components are involved in making that "thud" sound.

I suspect that the people who experience this problem may have at some point did some very spirited driving. Let's do a poll. Too bad no aunties in this forums otherwise can test out my hypothesis. :D
