Hi guys,Bitten by the track bug so need some info & insights on helmets & gloves for trackdays.I would like a open-face helmet that is lightweight at a reasonable price. I heard motorbike helmets are different from car helmets (car helmets are lighter, meets different safety standards)Where can I try & buy car helmets in malaysia and what do you guys recommend based on my requirements? What driving gloves do you guys use and recommend? Thanks in advance.

go to http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/ and browse their catalogue to get a rough idea of wht is in the market and then go from there..in Malaysia Sparco's and OMP's are easily available but limited models..but they should have just wht u need. Since u will not be doing any serious racing u would not need any FIA approved stuff ...just get those tht are used for karting would suffice.

for Sparco https://foursquare.com/v/speedzone-motorsports-gallery/4e38a002d164102b036a7337

for OMP https://www.facebook.com/pages/UHP-...hd/142627635815251?id=142627635815251&sk=info

For trackdays, you can just use motorbike helmets , cheaper and more choices for you. Can get under RM100 :)

If you plan to be a serious amateur or pro racer then you check out some FIA approved helmets

I use a cheapo motorcycle helmet (non full faced) which I got for RM50 and a pair of Go-Karting gloves which I got from the Shah Alam go kart center for RM50. Doesn't look so pleasing but hey, it serves it's purpose :)

maxxsp ..my helmet cost me rm25 ringgit plus the sponsors sticker came by free ...super light and served me well

Come we do group buy :4:

Maxxsp, Yes use open face helmet is more comfortable in as it is not so stuffy. unless you plan to do go karting as well.

Gloves if I am not mistaken the between the three brands, sparco, omp and alpinestars, omp has one model which is basic and cheaper then the rest.
non-fia but very nice and comfortable leather palm gloves.

For occassional track sessions, any Sirim approved non-full face ones will do its job...
Get a balaclava too while you're at it... so that it absorb the sweat on your head better..

As for gloves, I personally have Sparco ones... but do shop around and try on the gloves from the various brands. some are more comfortable than others, it's a personal fit item..

My 2 cents :

Helmets - FIA helmets can be those you use for karting ( non fireproof ) and also car racing ( fireproof nomex lined ). Both are FIA and Snell rate ( SA 2010 ). You cannot use a kart helmet for car racing as you need a nomex model. They look the same but the internal lining is the difference. On Arai helmets, the strap colour for a nomex model ( ie. Arai GP5, GP6 ) is LIGHT YELLOW compared to Black/Dark Blue on the kart helmet. ( ie. Arai SK5, SK6 ) Light Yellow cos the strap material is KEVLAR reinforced. Car helmets > RM2500. Kart helmet > RM1000.

Gloves - Same deal, car ones are fire rated and karts ones are more for abrasion protection. Some kart gloves will have knuckle protection by means of a hard plastic trimming. Yes, the fire rated ones will cost much more and you can also see the material differences. Kart Gloves > RM150, Car Gloves > RM400

Shoes - harder to see the difference here, frankly except the interior lining.....where the nomex lining is creamy in colour. ( same like the nomex gloves ) Kart Shoes > RM200, Car shoes > RM 500.

For track days - the open helmet is best and less hot but as slyder had said, you should not use that for karting where eye protection is necessary. The cheap motorcycle helmet is.......as you will say, cheap. Wun go well if you are driving a bimmer and wearing al cheapo helmet but this is my opinion. Gloves, nomex ones will be more comfortable, shoes any thin sole shoes will do if you are strapped for money.....

I have a friend who sells some of this stuff which he had acquired from ebay ( used and new ) and at dealer prices. PM me if you want his contact but he does not sell motorcycle helmets. You deal with him directly. I know he has a full Carbon Fibre helmet as well.......

Have fun and as always, be safe. Prices above are just approximate and based on my limited knowledge.

One more tip......if you really want a full face car helmet but not willing to fork out too much, the brand SOL can be considered. But again, you pay for the quality lar. Leona Chin uses this brand during her track racing days. No sure of pricing but it probably around RM1K mark.

The price of car helmets will also increase if you have the HANS post which is not needed for track days but needed when you race proper.

Cheers!

Thank you to all who gave me opinions and advice.

Forgot that I would need a full face helmet for karting. In the end I decided on a full face for both purposes.
Went with a karting helmet as I will only be doing the occasional trackday.
Bought a OMP Circuit (RM500) for myself and my brother bought a Sparco Club X1 (RM650)
Balaclavas cost RM80 each for basic Sparco ones.
