From our forum regarding this active steering fault....http://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/forum/the-bmw-range/-5-series/e60-e61/22831-active-steering-fault/page5

Mine they just asked me chang the whole things, huhu, so painful

Bro Twil....when approached by friends asking how painful owning a bimmer would be,I always tell them 2 pre-requisites either :

1. you have deep pockets or fat wallets or rich FAMA
2. you diy

I have the latter.....and even then it still hurts...but at a lesser extent.....peace!

No need to change...just take out the steering angle sensor & clean the disk....its pretty quick solution rather changing the whole steering column....happen to me once after clean it up till today no issue anymore

If it is a steering column problem be prepared to fork about 2.7k for the parts alone . For the E60 there are two seperate parts on is the steering column the other is a bearing which is attached to the steering column. Labour is rather subjective but your total cost max should be about 3k + - with labour

Bro Moots,

Yah, though it is painful enough but still Bimmer is great to drive at. Just see sometimes you guys got the job done so cheap thats why felt painful.. Hahahahha. Anyway. Plus minus cant run anyway

Mine clean, but still have the problem... steering feel heavy (error message pop up) initially start the car, after driving for 10 minutes, it will "gong" and re-appear the active steering error message, but this time, steering feel like normal (very light, not like lorry steering), seems the error still appear on i-drive, but steering works like normal.. still finding solution, else will change the steering rack sensor... :motz:

Bro,
I suggest you send to authorised service center like Ingress Auto to confirm the root cause. If you are using so called compatible battery like Bosch, that could be 99% the rootcause. Bosch config/parameter is not compatible and cannot be properly registered.
I bet you have this intermittent issue after you stop your car for very long hours or you drove short distance - less than 30 minutes.

Hi Bro Hunter,
This active steering error never pop up before, it happen while i was driving on the straight road, suddenly appear... then it went off again... after i make an U turn, it pop up again active steering error.... but recently i have changed the IBS cable (Black/Negative), is this the cause too?

Bro,
I 'm not the expert. I had the same problem after changed IBS cable as part of the BMW recall program. It appears to be common issue if you use the latest IBS cable but with non original battery. It seems the battery cannot be charged or supply proper voltage according parameters set to your car. As a result, some electronic part including active steering will have intermittent power supply.

Don't waste your time and money. Just send to authorised dealer to diagnose.

Perhaps I can relate what went wrong with Harry's active steering error.

I introduced him to M Speed to get a 2nd opinion as other workshops said that the whole steering rack has to be replaced.

Initially M Speed thought it was the active steering sensor that caused the error but after replacing a used one, the error code remain. Hence the next logical suspect is the Active Steering Control module located underneath the driver's seat. Upon checking this module, there were water stain marks around the metal casing of the said module (Three weeks ago, Harry discovered there were water leaking into the dashboard and elsewhere. He has since rectified the water leak).

The said module was opened up and air dried under the hot sun. After 2 hours or so, module was re-attached & error code deleted. Wowlah...the problem was rectified.

My mechanics did the same thing (blowing and drying) but unfortunately the error still persists. Kena change the unit.
