Would like to share my experience of RTT with you guys, I had my rear left bulged since 3 months back and did not border to change since the car is quite new n i wanted to see how long it can last, fm time to time i press on the bulge spot n can feel that it gets softer after awhile. This morning on my way for breakfast, the tyre warning suddenly on n tyre pressure is low, "pls stop your car slowly", the ride was normal and i could not feel loss of tyre pressure. I went to the nearest petrol station to inflate it, notice the bulge spot hd turn to a crack of 2" n you can't inflate anymore. I drove normally at below 80km/hr, once punctured warning on we cannot switch to eco or sport mode, the system can only stay with normal mode. After 1 hour+, i went home n took the car to Subang for tyre change, visually i could see the tyre left with 50% strength but driving feel was still quiet n steady at below 80km/hour. After 20km distance, i reach the tyre shop n noticed another crack emerged n the tyre temperature rose to double or triple than the rest, it ws flaming hot. The is no GY stock so i decided to change to ContiSportContact 5 SSR , comparatively the ride is more comfort than GY.The RFT is indeed more costly but it did not compromise the handling behaviour, can preserve our expensive rim n not interrupt our journey, my last experience on Accord normal tyre once a puncture due to crack the car cannot drive more than 5 km n it damage my rim.Advice to the member, once you notice a bulge be prepared to change the new set.

Next time please don't push your luck. Side wall damage (bulging) is very dangerous. No point waiting as you still need to change it. Worst case you have a major high speed blow up not just your car is gone but it might include you and your love ones. Trust me it's not worth it. I've came across many death due to high speed tyre blow ups. I had 6 inch nail on my side wall. Pressure was ok. Warning came out. I didn't notice any deflation shape of the tyre. Went to check at Ingress Penchala, not covered by warranty and their price for the tyre was RM1700. Quickly send it to Lim tyre Taman tun. Unable to patch as the puncture was on my side wall. Had it changed for Rm1200 (standard 17 inch 320 tyre). And It happened on my second month when I got the car.
Due to my personal and many friends' bad experience of tire related accidents, I never compromised my tire. It should be from a well reputed manufacture and I never delay changing it when it's due.

Thank you for sharing with us your experience of running a flat RFT. This would certainly help us on what to expect when we face the same situation.

Thanks for sharing and pleased to meet you here again. Terence

Hii......thank you for sharing your experience as I will be taking delivery of 328i m sport. I was told the car will be fitted with Pirelli P7 RFT. I have read good reviews. I have heard bad things and seen video frm the US on GY RFT bulging on U tube. How about Bridgestone or Michline RFT???

I am tyre industry, I always like to trial my customer's tyre as part of my self interest. In fact, I am glad to be able to experience the real punctured situation and be convinced on this RFT as I too hd similar thots to changed to non RFT. For our safety n and us that always like to punch the bmw, RFT can protect us better n it keeps you in control compared to normal tyres.

Btw, I made complain to Auto Bavaria abt the bulge n received immediate feedback stock tyre not under warranty and if bulge happened, it is due to driver hit something that impact the tyre. It is not manufacturer defect, AB is telling non sense, it EU/USA you can immediately claim a new set.

2 kinds of bulge. Side wall construction failure due to manufacturer defect or pot hole damage. The former is covered by tyre maker's warranty while the latter.. makan sendiri.

How to tell which is which? The tyre maker has to inspect the internal wall for pinch mark. If no pinch mark, then is manufacturer defect. Otherwise is road damage.

Talking to SC is waste of time because they either do not know the procedure to claim tyre defect or they simply choose the easy way out.

For the claim if confirm defect, the tyre maker will only allow you to claim the balance unutilized portion of the tyre.. If 80% tread left, then the car owner have to pay 20% of the replacement tyre price. So the earlier you claim, the better.

Either way, we as the consumer are screwed! Will have to out of pocket for discounted tyre AND out of pocket for full cost for another donut to maintain proper balance

If road kill then you are not screwed by tyre maker.. But Yes!.. Still screwed.. :4:

Experienced once within 6 months ownership. Had a bulged but went to Kuala Terengganu and when i went back hit another pothole. This time another bulged front side and 4 inch cracked line on rear tyre too.. Drove to speedline 40-50km/h to change. No damaged to both rims.

Has anyone successfully claim on manufacturer warranty?

Like i always say...if you like to drive fast (on public roads), then RFT is the only way to go...

but i wouldn't wait for the bulge to "explode" off couse!! ;)

Recently my RFT tyre punctured, totally empty. But the tyre pressure monitoring system still shows green, even tough I drove @ 40-50kmh for a few kilometer to the nearest shop. Why its not detecting it? Any idea?

AFAIK the TPMS will only work if you reset it after you pump your tyres to the correct pressure and you will always need to reset it after each pump. If it still doesn't work pls visit your SC to have them look at it.

I'm on non-RFT and my TPMS picked up low pressure in my tyre after a nail went through it about a month ago. Thanks to that I managed to drive to a nearby tyre shop to have it patched.

i Agree with Bruce.. if it buldge.. RFT or not.. change the tyres.. if u can get it claimed.. good.. if cant.. life goes on. 90% of bulging is caused by driving impact. There is no way a tyre company can warrant that. Dunlop in the pass (my dad was there since 1967 so i know some shit bout tyres too) warant it until they realised their generousity was taken advantage of.

I have used GY RFT for many years and never had a bulge.. touch wood..

I had a situation - when I lent my E90 to my friend when I went overseas (the deal was he send and picks me up from the airport).

After he picks me up from the airport and we were travelling at about 160kmh, then he tells me that my car is strange it feels unstable at speeds... then tells me btw, the tire low pressure warning came on 4 times ! When I asked him what he did then... he confidently says - "Oh I just reset the pressure monitor and it went away"...

In horror... I asked him to very slowly slow down and stop at the side of the road .... sure enough the tire had zero tire pressure... and he was driving at speed of up to 180kmh for afew days....

Sure enough, when I replaced the rft tire, the internals were all cracked up and un-usable... BUT luckily no one was hurt or killed....

That's the downside of RFT I never thought of... if the "user" doesn't know that a RFT is not indestructable... and has to be driven at low speeds when there is a leak. A normal tire would have gone totally flat and disabled him from doing any further flying around at 180kmh and risking his life...

Sheez... I shudder when I think of what might have happened...

Resetting the pressure monitor 4 TIMES and not taking the car to any tire shop for a mere check-up is certainly irresponsible of your friend. Since you are the registered owner (I assumed), you would still be held liable for any accident.
