Most members on this board would agree that proper warm up practices prolong the life of the engine and increase performance. The manual states to follow the warning lights on the cluster but I dont trust those. This is what I do:IF ENGINE IS NOT BROKEN IN DONT EXCEEDE 5500RPM1.To warm up the car start off and drive away. Do not let it warm idle. The engine and tranny need to be warmed up together2. If the oil temp is bellow 80°C dont excede 3000rpm. If you have smg use S1-S2 till the needle passes 50°C or the warning lights turn off.3. After 80°C engage sport mode(for those who prefer).S3+ You can now rev to about 3500rpm The closer the needle gets to 100 the more revs you can give it, still dont exced 5000rpm.4. once the temp is at about 100°C have all the fun you want.- KILO15 @ M3Forum.net

Just to add that, as for me, when starting better not to exceed 2000 rpm (80% of torque is available from 1500rpm) until the temp needle is at the halfway mark ... once reach halfway gradually increase your revs ... please remember to shift frequently cos our gearbox too need to be properly warm up as well ... good info bro Van1ty :top:

Any engine model you're referring to?

The author was referring specifically to E46 M3s, but the practice can be applied to any modern BMW. =)

From what I know, your gear has to shifted to N (normal) in order to circulate the gear box oil when you are in idle. In this way, both gear box oil and engine oils will heat up evenly. This was informed to me by a certified mechanic. The gear box oil will not circulate if your car is in P (Parking) mode.

No warm up.... just goooooo!

cool start & drive straight away in the morning makes driving very challenging! car jerking and almost hit my gate! damn! i'll never do it again!

why is it bad to warm up an engine by idling it? does it just apply to all engines or just bmw engines? i think our manual tells us not to warm up the car (by idling)

can someone confirm vladd_tappish's statement?
