http://en.espnf1.com/mercedes/motorsport/story/5450.html Mercedes has secured Malaysian oil company Petronas as a title sponsor for 2010 and beyond. The exact length and value of the Petronas deal has not been announced but team principal Ross Brawn welcomed the news. "Everyone at Mercedes GP is delighted to confirm our long-term agreement with Petronas and we look forward to working closely with our new partner in the future," he said. "Our plans for the new season are progressing well, as is the development of our 2010 challenger, and we look forward to seeing the car run in the new Silver Arrows and Petronas livery at the Valencia test in February." The sponsorship is good news for Mercedes, after German consumer goods company Henkel announced it would not be honouring a deal with the team as it was brokered by an unauthorised member of staff. However, Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug said the contract with Petronas would ensure the team's competitiveness in 2010. "Within the limits of the new Formula One resource restrictions, the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula One Team will be well positioned to achieve our goals. We will all strive to present efficient success in the future knowing at the same time that the new Formula One season, with some fundamental rule changes, will be a particularly challenging one." Petronas has long been associated with Formula One, having sponsored Sauber between 1996 and 2005 and BMW before it withdrew from the sport.

what utter rubbish... for two reasons..

1. Not truely Malaysian for we have a Malaysian Team on Board... why go to mercedes when we can be proud of our own country and it's sponsors..

2. Imagine now all advert's will be a merc inside... no more tie up... so our so called RM500.00 a piece shirts can't be worn...

once again.. is this truely our way ?

Petronas is looking far beyond that... Tying up with Lotus will limit its reach in the international arena... It's business at the end of the day...

knn... wei!!!!! petronas! support 1f one lah..

nanti people boycott your petrol station, then you know...

Sigh!!! So disappointed with petronas  They should have supported Malaysia Lotus F1 out of national pride regardless whether it makes business sense or not.

good thinking bro ...but it still sucks .....:stupid: how are we to be well developed when we do not have support from our very own Malaysian conglomerate .....it is sad and sick to the throat ....Talk about looking 'far beyond that', why! can't we look far beyond that with our own team????

+1. better to be associated with winners. need to get maximum returns in whatever form from money spent so that can earn big bucks to continue paying huge tax dollars to fund wanmysiau projects such as say for example f1 racing... got money also not necessary mercedes want any capalang company name on their cars so its probably a good deal. patriotism don't pay the bills...

mmm maybe its time to sell my BMW & get the Merc instead hahaha:stupid:

... i got a strong feeling Michael Schumacher had something to do with this...as it is MS is strongly rumoured to be driving for Mercedes..and which company does not want to be associated with the worlds greatest living billboard.....next advertisement campaign tagline by Petronas would be "Even the greatest one switched fuel, why not you?"

oh ya, i almost forgot... we only protect our own selves... just like ploton..

see where we are now ??? paying the second highest price for cars in the world !!

Malaysia Boleh!! as always for all the crappy reasons. Now let me get this straight.Petronas decided to sponsor the Merc team instead of our own F1 team or are they sponsoring both?wait a minute...whichever way our ass still gets screwed rite?

Should we be disappointed? nah,by now we Malaysian should be prepared for any kind of atrocities these people in power can throw at us what...Chill la guys,no matter how much noise we make,it ain't gonna make a bloody difference.Still I have to agree that it's terribly disheartening to know that there's no patriotism even as high up as Petronas.

It's has been said here that patriotsm doesn't pay the bills, true maybe and may I also add that this is how traitors are born.

I'm embarrassed for my country.

Good one bro. Schumacher will be parading his Mesra card hehehhe...

At the end of the day, I echo what erica34 said.

Having spoken to an ex BMW formula staff, the main reason for Petronas to tie up with a "car manufacturer" is to get its oil into their engines, just like what was done previously with BMW. Not only does Petronas gets maximum visibility, but also plenty of credibility, more so tying up with a premium car manufacturer.

Brawn GP CEO, Nick Fry was the first to meet Petronas when BMW announced their withdrawal from F1, months ago but there was no deal then as Petronas was not interested in independent teams.

Business wise, it makes perfect sense and syabas to Petronas for making the country proud.

what's the official petronas statement of not being involved with lotus' initiative?

as much as i would have loved to see Petronas on the Lotus F1 team, i think it was a business decision.

the Lotus brand is a very niche brand compared to Mercedes which has a world wide appeal.

to a lot of people, this may seem "unpatriotic" to our country...but...petronas is running a business...and the main priority of a business is generating income and also positive publicity...

if petronas does sponsor lotus, how many people around the world can associate petronas with lotus (not trying to belittle lotus, but the fact is how many lotus cars are there around)?

By joining forces with Mercedes, they are showing/ proving to the world that their products work well even in premium engines and as Mercedes has a huge following around the world, people could actually connect emotionally to petronas.

At the end of the day, Malaysians' opinions will still be divided...

petronas has been mingling with f1 for some time, and will be there in years to come. personally i feel it's more patrioritic (wonder spelled that right) we have parallel participation as it serves a new perspective in check and balance, at least for the lotus f1 team.

to sponsor one of the most prestigous teams in F1 history is definitely worth its investments. hopefully it would serves a platform to test petronas lubricants for the downstream sector to the highest level, and open more opportunites to acquire more oil blocks in the near future.

Ok, just out of curiousity, how many of us here is using petronas' lubricants in their beloved BMWs?

Petronas dun hv Ron 97. So I use Shell. Can get bonuslink point so can redeem toys to play hahaha. Also use Citibank Shell card to get rebates. So I can save more to mod car. hahaha
This is my personal business point of view.
