folks, i wonder if anyone has noticed the trend towards deletion of temperature gauge in dashboards of modern cars.i just notice in the new e90 3 series, the temp gauge is gone too - probably replaced by some idiot warning light/icon.what's your opinion on this direction?

I believe when there temp problem the tempr goes up really fast and hardly and mid tempr problems so they change it to warning indicator light.

Also, our eyes are not focus on the gauge but rather more attracted to warning lights.

just my two cent

Its been discussed before. The E90 has an electric independent water pump and combined with an active engine management, the temperature goes up and down frequently to suit the engine needs. Having a water temp gauge will freak the owner out. That and oh....hmmmm cost cutting :p

I just wait until the oil level sensor is able to do a reading before I push the car hard (the oil sensor will only do a reading when oil is up to operating temp)

Btw the MY07 E92s (and E93s I guess) replaces the fuel economy meter with an OIL temperature gauge which to me is more important than water temp gauge.

I don't know about other drivers, but I do take note of the temp meter when I drive, but a temp sensor to replace the conventional meter is fine for me.

To me, it looks like another step towards divorcing the driver from the car and driving experience. :(

Not only is the modern car aiding the driver to drive safely, now it seems they don't want you to know the state that your car is in.

So I would think most owners could thrash their car without knowing it is doing harm - i.e., no tell tale warnings of a slightly higher temperature, etc, etc.
