We know how much thread we have and we can adjust our driving accordingly but at high speed, if there's a tyre that choose to explode, its more likely the old tyre and you pray its not your front tyre! That's why I always place the newer and better condition tyre at the front, if impossible a tyre that was not patched before.
And new tyre actually has lesser grip than the old tyre on dry road because old tyre can provide more tarmac surface contact and that translates into grip. Moreover the silicon coating on all new tyres to prevent it from sticking onto the mold is slippery and takes time to wear off.
On RWD cars, the rear will wear out faster as these are the drive wheels. The wear is even across the width of the tire.
The front wheels on RWD cars would then only be for steering purposes. The wear pattern will differ, having more scrubbing type wear on the outer edges due to cornering forces. This will be wear less than the rears.
Where to put 2 fresh tires.... front or back, both arguments will work, but I would put them in the front 1st as to wear out the old fronts next so u get to change the other 2 within a short period of time.
bro,
Based on this video, the general rule is we should always mount the best tyres (in terms of threadware) at the rear to minimise oversteering/tail-out, which is more difficult to control than understeering!

On all the E90 320i owners I spoke too, they confirm front wear faster than the rear and the logic is we have an "underpower" car that created not enough wear to the rear compare to the 6-potters. Don't forget we all have a super makan front disc brake, which kills the front tyre faster..
Some may say Hey! you brake more than you accelerate la! So be it..
Anyway, we shall soon put all this behind as the moment we move on to staggered rims, whether to put new tyre in front or rear will not be an option anymore..
