Taking a corner from the kerinchi link to federal highway today...as I went over one of the drainage/expansion joints that go across the road, my left rear door went from being closed completely to not closed properly with the door locks still engaged. The sensor indicated that the door was opened !! This all happened at around 100+ kph....geezus...I certainly didn't see this feature in the 5 series brochure or in the owner's manual...Anyone else experienced this crap?Adrian.

To me, it's just another case of didn't close door properly. But it shouldn't happen again, continue to monitor and if it happens again, you may need to claim a new door latch.

Try and lock your door when it's not closed properly...then let me know if that's the case.

bro, bring it back to BMW. ask them what the heck happened!!
Bang table if you need to...

If door not fully closed, u shouldn't be able to lock the car. In fact, u should get a warning on your dash. Your car is still new, things are still tight. If you are already furious over the matter, by all means, be my guest to go SC complain or bang table or what not, rather than posting here to see who has these "new feature" u discovered.

Meanwhile, u can do a simple experiment yourself, ensure u shut the rear door with reasonable force, then drive around with it to see if it happens again. If u are thinking "why should I test for them".. Again, refer to previous paragraph last sentence.

No intention to bang tables. Generally doesn't get anyone anywhere. If it's a door latch issue, then yeah...great, at least the source of the problem can be resolved...however if this can be an issue in one car, it certainly can be an issue in others. It's not just an engine or gearbox problem which causes annoyance on the frequency of visits to the service center, but it's a serious safety issue.

BTW. regardless of how new the car or how tight it is, a fully closed (no warning light when I took off, but it came on when the door became unclosed) should never come unclosed.

As for the experiment, it's only natural that I've been observing, it's just normal driving and this is the first time it happened after 12000km's and it hasn't replicated itself. Either way I will go and get it checked out next week as per your advise.

As for the Title of the Post...a bit of sarcasm la...

It happened to my e32 V8 imported model lately... funny thing it was shut, door locked, but took corner over a bump, left rear door open, but latch still on..
check couple of times for a fault, no outcome...

can only think it was shut, but not a fully shut, dur to the hook latch not latching down fully. You see, bmw makes the door latch to fit within a tight tolernaces, no free play, but i believe all manufacturers locking system is following the TUV, etc requirements with the 5 star euro n-cap ratings...

what could have happen that the rear doors have the double throw handle, it could be that it was used once, then loosen, then lock down, but not fully latched down.

if i was you, then i be cautious at the back passenger sitting...belt up..

Yeah...even with the double throw handles, the first throw is to unlock the door, the 2nd to open the door. latch should really still be locked down. Will update after my visit to the service center.

The latch is like a hook, it probably not fully lock down, say at 80%, yet tight enough to depress the door sensor which creates a false sense to trick the door to continue to activate auto lock, but when a chassis flex occurs, it just unlatch. Of course it still falls back to the safety catch. The car is still safe. Once the door seal rubber soften through time, the latch will surely achieve 100%.

One quick fix if you complain to the SC is to loosen the catch bracket, item 8, so to allow more room for the latch to fully shut. Try to push the door from outside to see if u can feel some free play by observing the door gap. If you totally can't push the door in after door shut, that means the catch bracket is installed too deep. Check the other doors too as a bench mark.
