New engines for 5 Series[06 January 2005] BMW has confirmed that it will add three new six-cylinder engines to its 5 Series range in the Spring. The 523, 525 and 530i will be powered by variations on the same magnesium-alloy theme. All will have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a six-speed auto option and, on the 525 and 530, the additional option of DSG. Basic performance and economy figures for manual Saloon models are: 523i - 174bhp, 170lbf.ft, 8.5 secs, 146mph, 33.2mpg 525i - 215bhp, 184lbf.ft, 7.5 secs, 152mph, 32.5mpg 530i - 258bhp, 221lbf.ft, 6.5 secs, 155mph (limited), 32.1mpg All models also feature the latest version of BMW's DSC+ system. This offers five new safety features: Brake Standby - primes brakes for emergencies Rain Brake Support - keeps brake discs dry Hill Start Assist - prevents rolling on gradients Fading Compensation - counteracts overheating Soft Stop - brings the car to a gentle halt

if 523i coming out, i wonder how much will it cost???? and what specs will it have????

Is the 523i a detuned version of the 525i? Are the 6 cylinders engine getting valvetronics?

Isn't the new 2.5 engines (to be fiited to the E90) a valvetronic unit with magnesium alloy and double vanos? That's why it can churn out 215hp from only 2,500cc!!!!

The 523i looks like an old version engine judging from the horsepower and torque unless it really is 2,300cc and not a detuned 2,500cc.

Do they have the 523i?? I doubt so...the 3.0 engine is supposed to pump out 258hp...almost M3 level!! AWESOME!

Would be really interesting to read the reviews on the new 3.0 - when the M54 is superlative as it is (Just got a call from a race car driving friend who raved and raved about his experience driving a 3.0 Z4 auto). BMW has done it, again!

"""Do they have the 523i?? I doubt so...the 3.0 engine is supposed to pump out 258hp...almost M3 level!! AWESOME! """

But it is still NOT an M3. Which M4 were referring to? E30 one I guess. It is still a long way to compete the any M3, not to mention other goodies it gas besides the engine.

Of course its still not a M3 duh!! We are talking purely about the new BMW engine and the E60! By the way the new E90 will have the same engines in it

Yes BMW has up the ante again in the engine performance/hp race.

i though i heard from the old forum that the 520i will have a revised version of the engine this year, giving out 177bph, which can go head to head with merc E240.........

eh, any idea what is the time delay between they introduce the CKD and CBU model ah????

Yup and the engines are still NA... (naturally aspirated)... no turbos and no superchargers. (I do mean the non-diesel engines though.)

And lets not forget, despite the significant increase in performance, these new engines are designed to comply with the latest Euro emission requirements. So cuntsidering that, BMW has done it again! :D

Wireless Junkie,
Where did you get that info? I am comtemplating to buy a E60 but do not like the 520i's power and 525i is too expensive. Really like the 530i very much.
Based on your new info, a new 523i could be my answer. Wonder how much would it be.

regards,

Hi! All,

New here.

The 523i is a 2.5L detuned. I saw a price list for tte German market from a source that I would say reliable. There have been rumours that it was a 2.2L modified 2.3L.

Energy, it has only 5 or 7 horses more than the 2.2L at 177bhp. So if it's starting pull that you are looking at you will be disappointed also. But the torque shown here is about 20Nm better than that of 2.2L and you should get better in-line acceleration from it. The 2.2L has a decent in-line acc. but not great.

BTW, heard no more 6-pot 520i (and the price list didn't show either). The new E90 320i is using the 4-pot valvetronic. Not sure if there will be a 520i using this; have heard rumour it will be a 518i

Yup, its true as the new E90 320i will be using the 4 pot valvetronic engine.
