It's called a radar/laser detector and yes,it's illegal here in Malaysia.If you're caught with it and the cops want to go all the way,you can be fined up to RM10,000.And yes,the police can detect it with some of the more advance units they use these days.
having said that,I've got a Microfuzion that I got thru Ebay that I do use but like it was said here,I'm still not sure if this damn thing does the job.The only time i noticed that it goes off is around banks and hospitals.The more interesting gadget that you want to have is the radar/laser jammer which actually jams the cop's speed detector.That one is much more expensive and I have no idea how well it works.I dread to think what the police might do to you if you are caught with one of those though.
The Garmin GPS units do a fairly good job of warning you where there are known hotspots but again it's just a guide and you would have to update your GPS unit on a regular basis.Try to stay on the right side of the law my fren:driver:
