Bros, just took ownership of a 2001 e46 320Ci 2.2L M54, serviced it in Dec, now not more than 2 mths later, the engine oil has gone down to the min lvl, need to top up. Mechanic suggested castrol magnatex semi synth since the engine states that BMW prefers castrol. Read online that it is not uncommon, but just after 2 mths? Fyi, am not a salesman, do not drive it much, except to n from work. Not sure what the problem is, just wanted to ask for advice before i went to the mechanic. Not sure if this is a direct relation to the problem, been experiencing bad idling during cold starts in the morning. Car would judder like it would stall, but runs fine after. Could not be the MAF problem cos i just changed new MAF 2 mths ago also.

Can u put it the scanner to check it first before making any comment ?
Alot of us got the BMW scanner 1.4 or inpa scanner. U can ask 1 of us to check it for u.

bro, not free thats y asking.
gonna take it to the mechanic in the weekend.

bad news, check engine light lit up when i was on the way home from work. maybe too low...
Just topped up a litre of engine oil. Hope it goes away.

my mechanic recommended me a kind of additive called " REVO".
im gonna try it out my next oil change.
another 3000 kms that is....

If you are losing oil over a span of 2 months period, then something is not right.

1. Check for sign of oil leak at the right side of the engine around the exhaust pipe. Also do you have any smell like oil burning inside the car? if you have, then most probably your head cover gasket is harden and need to be replaced.

2. Check for white smoke when you start the car in the morning. Is there any white smoke coming out from the exhaust pipe? If there is and also when the engine is warm up, chances is your piston rings are worn out. Do a compression test to confirm it.

3. Another thing if you find oil leak at the front or rear of the engine, then the oil seal is harden and need to be replaced.

Pertaining to your problem of bad idling during cold start, chances is the problem is due to the fuel pump or the fuel filter. Change the filter first and then the pump if the symthop still persist.

yeah think lately theres some burning smell inside the car, especially when i first start the engine. No white smoke though.
Replacing seals n all wont be very expensive r they?

No, it wont cost you an arm or a leg to replace the seal.

You just need to buy the gasket and 15 pieces of rubber bushings. it is a simple DIY job with some basic tools.

You need 15 pieces of item 7 and 1 set of item 16 as shown below.

Yes you can get the part from BA. They are common items.

added a litre of engine oil last night, but the check engine light is still on...weird
could it have been because the oil levels went too low?

checked dipstick, oil levels are at normal levels now, almost at max level but the check engine light is still on.

do i need to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU? prefer not to cos my head unit has some settings in it.

went to the mech today, he just said top it up, come back when ready for service, and if still bad, service and top up with castrol GTX (the mineral oil, am currently on magnatex 10w-40 semi synth). He didnt seem too worried. No white smoke, could just be seals hardening and leaking into the engine, hence eaten up. Some of the spark plugs had some oil in in it, but not alot.

year 2000, 320ci, i shld be the third owner, bought it off my fren. It is pretty well maintained.
just showing its age i guess.
