Visited Albert today to replace the long due steering column shaft. Plan been put off couple of times due to unavailability of a good condition half-cut part. Was told a brand new part cost about RM3-4k.

Been living with knocking sound in the steering column area whenever driving through uneven surfaces and free play (about 0.5 to 1.0inch) while turning the steering wheel. This been happening ever since gotten the car and the last change of steering coupling and lower joint only managed to minimise the issue but not eliminated it totally. Such condition causes a lot of nervousness and non-confidence during corners and high speed driving.

The whole job took about 3 hours as it involves a lot of work of dismantling the whole steering column (including steering wheel, steering angle sensor), up to the steering coupling and lower joint in the lower part of engine.

Went home a very very happy man as now there is now zero free play and no more knocking sound. Feels absolutely like a true UDM. :)

bro wingzee, mine got the same problem as yours. changed tie rod, steering rack, coupling but still got the free play.last few weeks, changed out the steering shaft. nahhh, settled. now im a happy man. hehehe.

bro does this contributes to steering free play too?

Yes bro. I had about 0.5-1inch of free play in steering ie. turn the steering, loose feeling and no response to wheel turning. Now it's 100% gone. :)

@taufiqyaakob:

I changed everything as per your list too. Initially thought it's the coupling and joint as it's a common replacement item but didn't help much. Steering shaft hardly fails and it seems that this knocking issue is more prevalent on 6cylinders than the M43 or N42.

gotta check mine then i am having some free play too but mine i feel it in highways and speeding up , and its like car flying on the air.. i thought its steering rack but so far no leaking and the rack still looks intact , did u go through it bro? during high speed?

Initially thought it's my rack too but got it refurbed last year. Have you checked the rest of the handling and suspension department items?

Freeplay in rack might be the culprit too. Like this:

Mine was like this before the change:

Still safe to drive lah. No issue coz I been living with that for almost a year. But high-speed can be abit unnerving sometimes due to the free play.

Don't rush to fix it as it is important to source for a good steering column. Preferably get one from a halfcut rather than those loose parts.
