Dear Randy,
I believe they are referring to the i-drive kind of GPS Nav DVD. For that I'm sure that E46, E38 and E39 cannot use.
But there are Malaysian/Singapore Nav CD map for MK1 -> MK4 E46, E38 and E39 that many people are using. The part number for the disc is stated in the same thread page 8 given by Funfer_Fahrer.

Calvin,

Are you sure that the CD works on MK1 to MK3? Any guys using Malaysian CD on MK1 to MK3 and it works?

I understand that you are using MK4 and E46 cars comes with SA609.
I checked in the ETK and notice that SA609 is used in E46.

Dont know whether these people at BMW here knows ther stuff. Anyway, I am going to test it out this week and see if it works.

Thanks

I've seen my customer's E46 M3 is using it, and he is having MK3 CD ROM. And the disc is for Malaysia / Singapore map.

Calvin,

You are right. I just came back from Autobavaria and tested the CD on MK3 and it worked fine. All this infor from BMW is incorrect and they dont know thier stuff.

Tell me something what is the difference between the Mk3 and Mk4 in respect to using the map. Are there different CD for MK1,2,3 and a DVD for MK4?

Are you using the DVD or the CD.

So now have to look out for some copy of CD's flying around. Too expensive to buy and surpsingly in SG, it is being sold for SGD 500 plus only

Hi Funfer_Faher

In respect to your Japan Nav, the navigation computer is exactly the same for any countries. This is because it uses the same GPS satelite. What is difference on your car, is that they have installed a japanese software enabler. there is a prt number for this in the ETK. This is an additional sofware to enable to read japanese.
What I would suggest to you is to re-install your OS and then see.

Regards

Thank you for the info. Do you happen to know anyone who can help me?

MK4 has the ability to watch the digital map in perspective view (2D format) for OS v2.7 and newer. But MK3 doesn't have the perspective view option even updated to OS v2.7 or newer. Beside that MK3 can only playback CD format, but MK4 can playback DVD and CD format digital map.

I'm using the MK4, but digital map for Malaysia / Singapore only available in CD format for E46, E39 and E38. DVD map are only available for newer model 3, 5, 6, 7 and Z series with i-drive.

I found out the current version 2007/01 map give me wrong direction, hope the next edition have all the problem solved.

Of course he is right!
Calvin knows more than all the Autobavaria sales staff put together!

Autobavaria is comprised of a bunch of morons who have no idea what they are talking about, and they have run the brand image of BMW to the ground!

One sales staff once told me unequivocally that the way you differentiate a 4 pot from a 6 pot is if the engine is mounted transversely or longitudinally!!!!!

Hello, I have a Japan spec. Z4 and attempted to upgrade the OS to 29.1 with no success. After inserting the upgrade disk there is a pause and then the message "Install BMW disk" appears. Nothing changes, and the drive continues as before.

The drive looks similar to a Mk4 but it has an additional compactflash slot on the front and the screen displays do not look like the other displays I have seen on the internet.

It seems that my drive is not a regular Mk4. Has anyone successfully upgraded?

Thanks
Mike

WOW! This Thread started back in year 2005.

I have the CD (Malaysia & Singapore) if anyone is still interested, give me a PM or SMS (012-2222554).

It works on my UK Spec E46 but the map is damn outdated.

Calvin Tan, how to check the version of my map CD ?

You can buy a TIBO for around RM1999 in Low Yat Plaza with maps of Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. A friend got one last Sunday that's how I know, though I don't know which shop. It also plays music and movies. Going to look for one myself!

How do I know my DVD Nav System is MK1,2,3 or 4?? I cant seem to find any word saying MK. The only words I can see from the DVD unit is "BMW Navigation System DVD II"

btw, mine is E46 3s Jap.

Hi Westdoor, Have the same car, Japan Spec, convertible.

Have researched and Japan Navigation system is different. I replaced the entire head unit (CD and Minidisc) to a local spec (CD and DVD) unit which comes with the Navigational system. The DVD cannot read Video DVD's but is for the navigational CD.

Note that you need to keep your old unit if you wanna update software etc.

PM me if you need the contact for the workshop I used

hi Krazeepete , My Navigation Drive is using DVD-Rom Drive state there and the disc is DVD-RW with Double Layer type . The drive is at the back of the car , not in the dashboard infront . TQ

No the DVD drive is only for the nav if you want to play DVD you will have to get extra DVD changer
