Looked around this forum and Google, but didn't find anything useful or relevant. "Problem" description: when my e30 moves at slow speeds, with gear engaged in 1st or 2nd, all pedals depressed, as if you are coming to the stop before the traffic lights, it will begin to jerk and you'd hear clunking sound from under the car. As if there is some free play between your gearbox and rear axle. If clutch is pressed in, car would roll smoothly, as if nothing wrong. So, its definitely a free play somewhere. I am sure its a common thing, most e30 would have that (except Mizhan's one), but i am still curious to know what might it be, i'd love to get to the bottom of this, perhaps even attempt to fix it one day hehehehe Any ideas? Its not a huge problem, one you aware of it, you'd learn to drive the car in such a way to avoid it from happening, but still, i don't mind fixing something that is potentially worn out. My e30 deserves this.

mine also experincing the same, sometimes quite bothering me though

If it's something along your drivetrain right under you, I guess the most common ones to check are:
- Rubber coupling aka guibo
- Center support bearing
- Longshaft u-joint

First two are cheap, last one is non-replaceable for an E30 if I'm not mistaken, will have to find another longshaft.

One note I will add, if its the center shaft bearing bushing that has gone bad, you should experience vibrations at certain rpm or speed.

Another problem that could contribute to the 'clunking' could be around the differential area, perhaps the bushing is bad, or the bolts that are holding the differential is loose. In the e36 case, the front differential bolt is known to shear and cause the diff to drop.

But to my understanding, there is a certain amount of driveline slop/elasticity that will be there. Read that its pretty common in a lot of older BMWs, some people notice it more than others :p

try changing your plug cable ... perhaps there are some loose sparks coming out from the cables " due to cracks " hence causing the jerk ...
