dudes, I drive a 320i with an auto tranny..... I find the power sufficient most times.... change your diff to a 3.91 or 4.10 (like mine) and the car will come alive!
I also find the M20B20 to be quite revvy...... it will rev happily all the way past 5k rpm if asked and it will do so smoothly.... I've even redlined it once (but my guess is sustained 6k+ rpm on the M20 isnt a very good idea  )
Keep it above 3k rpm and it gives most cars a run for their money ..... I find that you need to push it to get the most out of it e.g. manual downshift from 'D' to 3 etc...... my girl has done 200kmh before prior to diff swap (not bad for 20+ yr chassis ) but it does only 180-190kmh now (due to diff swap)..... (it'll prob do close to 200 if there was enough road....
I'd leave the engine well enough alone and concentrate on maintaining it in the best way you can..... weight loss programme will probably have very little impact unless you are willing to go the track car route, but it would be impractical...... if still kenot tahan, I wd suggest applying at the B25 counter pronto!
