Hi everybody. I need some help on my E36 318i manual that i just bought. I think this is a m40b18. not very sure since i only own a e28 n 34 in Malaysia. I am now in Australia. Anyway here is my problem. My car jerks when it is at static to going off. 1st gear or reverse it still jerks. As long as is when is completely stop and to going off. It usually happens when the car is hot (maybe after running for 30 mins) then it jerks (only when going off). Then today drive more than an hour the car suddenly feels like the clutch is slipping. The rpm meter and sounds tells me that the engine is able to rev till the red line smoothly but when i put in 1st gear, this time it did not jerk but rpm is going like normal and the car just don go as fast as it should. Like a clutch slip feeling. However i cannot feel anything wrong with the clutch as the clutch is light not heavy and i do not need to lift the clutch pedal really high for the car to move. Thus, i believe the clutch is not wear out yet but why does the car feels like this?Really new to e36, didn't even know that the clutch and break fluid shares the same reservoir till i check the owner manual.Sifu sifu please help me. Is expensive to repair car here so i will try to do it my self. So far the only job i have done was changing the spark plug, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter.thank you in advances!

Bro

Its ur clutch. U sure u can fix them urself?

thanks for the reply, i am guessing is the clutch too..But i just not sure why it only happen said about after an hour drive..do u know why?and today i drive for about hour too and it did not happen.

I still thinking want to do my self or not as i only saw my dad do it all the time when i was still in malaysia. Only thing stopping me now is buying the tools for it. and wont be able to use a hoist and air gun.

do you know how much this clutch set is selling in malaysia? I just found out is 430 aussie dollars here just for the parts.

Thanks!

My E36

just to share some pic of my current ride. Miss driving bmw since i came to Australia.

worn clutch plate can be a cause standing start jerking... and since there's oso symptom of slipping clutch, so definitely need to change..

There are 2 different types of clutch set depending whether your flywheel is the single mass or the heavier dual mass flywheel...

Had the same problem with my E36/M40 and also thought the clutch gave way but after changing the engine n gearbox mounts , everythings solved!! You see, when the engine is hot there is a lot of vibration
, especially during first n reverse gears when the rpm is low. I also changed the spark plugs.

Been busy and just to update the problem. Seems like not happening anymore, just once the other day. Not sure why. Maybe clutch pump leaking a bit. But the jerks come when is hot and i think is the spark plug cable.

Hi, thanks for the advise. Jerking and vibration is different, Bad engine mounting only will cause vibration not jerking. But i guess i know whats wrong with the car, as i saw some sparks on the plug cable. i took off the cables cover near the timing belt area. Tested it one night, drive the car till it starts jerking and i check the cables and a part of it is sparking. So i guess the cause of jerking is from the cable. previously it jerks on a day light and i cannot see the sparks as is bright day so did not suspect the cable.

cheers
