Or you brake dust shield touching some thing ? have you checked your wheel bearings okay ?

There is some whirring noise at the tyres, but thats only when I drive 140kmh and above... I thought that might be the tyres not the bearings ?

We all could be wrong or the something wrong with the owner too..... hahaha

but on the serious side...owners some times dun relate the problem accurately where it is...

Hahahahahaha....

Yeah and I think it's best to get a mechanic to check out the problem as to what's really happening. It seems that the owner changed almost everything on the front part except the shafts and wheel bearings, lol

Hmmm... I've sent to a couple of mech... That's why almost everything is changed... The mech ive been, BMW Quill and Not-BMW told me its the steering rack... changed it to recond, as original is F expensive... But the sound is still there... I love the car handling, but I cannot afford $$ these trial and error method...

Appreciate the input though.... :top::top:

No worries ReHeT and yes, the steering rack is super expensive. Even on JDM rides it costs a bomb to replace. If you have changed almost everything on the front drivetrain, there are only a few prime suspects left like the wheel bearing, brakes, drive shafts, etc. I still suspect it might be the drive shaft as the noise appears when you turn and do corners. Wheel bearing will consistently produce sounds if it is worn off and noticeable especially if you're driving on high speeds.

I'm not expert in BMW but I've owned a few other cars before so I'm sharing based on my experience :) I apologize if I might be wrong but just trying to help whenever I could.

aiaya... BMW's are all rear wheel drive, No front wheel drive, there is no CV joint infront la...aiyoyo...

front from the left when you turn...

Last weekend while reversing out my E90 from the porch, I hear klak klak sound from the engine, so loud that it's almost same like FWD car turning with a critical stage busted drive shaft. The sound stop after that but ever since, I can feel vibration in the cabin, even in the shift knob. When on aircond or engage gear, the growling sound a tad louder compare to neutral with aircond off.

I just replaced the alternator bearing and vBelt tensioner plastic pulley.. now car okay d. It seems BlackE90 replaces the same items sometimes ago. The alternator bearing is like our bicycle rear sprocket. It allows one way spin together with the belt but when engine slows down, the alternator's spin momentum will continue to spin despite vbelt slowing down, hence reduce engine drag or lost of engine efficiency.. fantastic innovation but all in, to replace both metal and plastic pulley, I spend RM420.. :(

Btw, my mileage only 56k km, less than 4 year old N46 E90 320i.

This is the alternator with pulley taken out. The plastic tensioner pulley on the left of the alternator also I ask to change because got free play liao..
ALTERNATORPULLEY2.jpg

This the alternator pulley.. there's a catch and release mechanism inside the pulley, which mine can catch but can't release, thus transmitting vibration to the cabin.. check out the tools require to open this bearing.. some say its "special"..

I'm not sure if this helps.. just to share my experience..

I do understand that BMW's are rear wheel drives but drive shaft (or perhaps it's called something else by BMW's terms?) needs to be there. If not, it should be something else connecting the steering sub/rack or the wheels won't turn. Perhaps there are some confusion here but I did a quick check in realoem and there is indeed a drive shaft component:

Bro, the long shaft is connected to the rear wheels of the car la....did you know he is driving the e90 sold here is 2 wheel drive unless it's a e90X (4 wheel drive)

here is the picture of the diagram you posted...

Hi AB,

Just would like to ask you where did you get the parts replaced? As the RM 420 damage sounds OK to me. I had the same symptom on my 320 now and suspect it was the same culprit. How long did they take to do this?

BTW , tried PM you but your mailbox is full

Thanks,

Firz67

hehe... my inbox has 1600 mails because last time committee ma.. now down grade to 200 mail capacity, need to delete 1400 mail.. forget it la! :1:

I did mine at Optimum. The plastic tensioner pulley is $106, upah is $45, the alternator pulley is $269, jumlah $420. Very easy job, if got parts, 10min kao tim!
