Dear BrosSorry, if i were suppose to introduce myself. Anyway, will do so later as in the rush. :wink:anyway, of late, my e46 ci seems to shows signs of problem. When i dont drive for more than 2 days, i notice that at times, it shows S instead of P and at times the gearbox problem warning signals comes on. When i drive with the warning signal, the changing of gear will be jerky. However, if i switch on and off the ignition several times, it somehow dissapear and drive is normal.I have done diagno and it seems to be ok.Any idea why? cheers

Thanks bro for the speedy reply...

may i know whats the cost of repair? Where is the best and honest place to fix it? i'm ok with KL/PJ area.

THere is another workshop i went and say that my gearbox needs rebuilding coz its about to breakdown. My car mill is about 90 K km. is it true?

Cheers

Based on my experience, the E46 GB will give you trouble free until 100,000 KM..

changing the position gearshift is relatively cheap as it is located outside the GB.

There are many shop available. check the thread of good workshop.

100,000 km only? Any idea how much it would cost to change/rebuilt the gear box? Got to know this first hand just in case my GB breakdown. yikes!

My E46 325i GB problem was the failure of the copper ring of the auxiliary pump. The copper ring or bushing was worn out prematurely and cause all the ATF to leak out. Have to change the pump which cost about RM1500 (new). Also have to change the torque converter as it found that the sleeve was slightly worn out. Luckily, the GB was intact. Later found out that the cause of the failure was due to the GB mounting was damaged and cause the misalignment.

Heard from my mechanic that most of the 325i GB have this kind of problem. (pump leaking and bushing failure)

Another thing to consider is the thermostat for the ATF cooler. Due to it location (located at the bottom of the radiator), it tends to chocked up and get struck. If the thermostat is struck, the ATF oil temperature will heat up and the end result is GB might failed prematurely.

i got the same problem on my 330ci...when drive in D, suddently S mode appear on and off between 3-5 seconds and makes my car jerky...

seems like we all have the same problem...will try to get someone to change the contact and see if it works...otherwise, time to spend more!! getting a little annoyed with BMW...as alread spent over RM15 K in the last 6 months!!

I'm lucky but scary to hear all abut gearbox problems.
Already 3 years & clocking 172K km still not showing any sign of problem.
I've changed ATF twice at 60K and 110K km milleage.
Hopefully can touch 200K km. InsyaAllah....

Good Preventive Maintenance !! :top::top:

Spend a few hundred to save a few thousands in overhaul..

Just got an e46 and having problems with the gearbox,
When cold..it's excellent but after driving for say 40 to 50km's once the gearbox is heated up, there is a jerk exactly when downshifting from 5th to 4th and at the exact speed of 60km/hr..meaning ure driving at hundred and u release the throttle and slow down, it gives a jerk at exactly 60..even when driving, u shift from d to s, there is that jerk..but upshifting smooth as hell..and when that problem occurs, there is bad jerk when the car is stationary and you shift between D and R..please remember that this problem happens only when hot..

Went back to the dealer since got warranty and he sent the car to his panel...the guy changed the GBox and tested for one day..when I collected 2 days later and drove awhile, the SAME PROBLEM occured...damn pissed offf...send the car back..checked and checked and he said have to add a bigger radiator for the oil cooling...yet to see the results as i'm collecting it this thursday..

Has anybody encounterd this problem before..car is 2002..mileage 135k and its a 325i...!!!

dei when did you get a 325i. M-Sport version.. come let try some trial side by side. ha..ha..

Dealer know what about GB and radiator lah. It should be mechanic who should be advising you. I dont think the dealer will change the GB even though he say so.. :stupid:

135K is just about the time for servicing the GB, hose, radiator, thermostat, expansion tank, water pump, control arm bushing, engine and GB mounting.. Ha..ha.. you buy a car to do a major overhaul..

Coming to your GB problem.. check the thermostat located under the expansion tank. it for the ATF cooler. Drain the radiator and check the liquid coming out. If there is any sign of whitish material (Aluminium oxide), have the radiator flush properly. Most probably your coolant have expired.

Sometimes it might just be the ATF that needs to be changed. The bush jammed and caused big time failure to my gearbox. Got it rebuild and after 8 months gearbox failsafe prog kept popping up. Took it to the workshop for warranty and they thought it was the gearbox ecu that was going. They changed my ecu but gearbox failsafe prog still popping up randomly. They even disassemble my gearbox to look for signs of failure but didn't find any. After few weeks of meddling, I decided to use back the old ecu and asked the workshop to change the ATF again. Until now my gearbox is prob free. Now I am changing ZF ATF, filter and gasket every 25k km and it should last me for some time.

Good to change ATF and filter on a regular basis but I think 25K is a bit too early.

Which bush jammed are you refering to? It is the hydarulic pump bushing? I had the problem of the bushing failure for the hydraulic pump which cause all the ATF to leak out.

Most of the problem will come when the GB is heated up. But my one the problem only happen when the GB/Car is cold...after the car is hot, everything work perfect and smooth... Sooo headache....Until now still canot solve the problem. I took my car to see so many gearbox expert...few trial n error method oso did not solve it...so i decided to live with it...now almost 10 month...but still hoping the problem can be solve..
