Hi sifu's, Today for the first time ever I felt what ppl call a heart stopping moment when I pulled up infront of Stuttgart to just purchase a bumper grill. My UDM couldn't reverse, when engage gearstick to R, it felt just like neutral. But I reversed the car out of my parking lot about 10 mins before that. Immediately called the mech frm Stuttgart w'shop to diagnose. When he plugged in the computer, no faults appeared. Even when I off and on the engine there were no codes that came out, even the gearbox fault indicator on dash did not light up. But my car felt perfectly fine on D. Shifts smooth and drives normally. So drove back home worried about the hole a gearbox transplant would burn in my pocket. But when I reached home, just to try my luck I engaged R, and she reversed perfectly in to my car park. Very very puzzling. Anyone else experienced these symptoms before? Btw I drive a 2003 AB 318i N42 2.0 valvetronic. Hoping for someone to she'd some light on the situation. I have had the car for more than 4 yrs, g/box flushed every 40k to 50k kms max, oil cooler replaced once at 80k kms, car mileage now 145k kms. Last flush was at 110k kms. Intended to do a flush next week. But now thinking if a flush would help or I need to change/overhaul g/box once and for all.

It could be a symptom of a major problem, or could just be your ATF needs replacement. When i was running 5HP18 on my E34, sluggishness in changes was remedied by fluid change every 6 months.

Could just be reverse solenoid or gear position switch. Each are only couple of hundred bucks. What is your milleage of the car? For a car almost 10 years old, it may be a good idea to send it to gearbox expert to diagnose and check if overhaul is required, just in case. Recommended one is MScope Baru Caves. Looking for Mr Tan/Ah Hong.

A full overhaul of the gearbox with a recond torque converter should set you back for about RM6.5k with 1 year warranty given.

I agree with wingzee, go have it checked at mscope. Sometimes our cars are moody especially when you have new love in house :) cabut :burnout:

Thanks bro, will have her diagnosed in the next few days. I'm due to travel to Penang next week. Now in a dilemma whether I should drive or not, but even today she seems to be running perfectly fine.

Best is to get her checked. And do some preventive maintenance if required. Coz GB failure can happen anytime.

Will try the cheaper solution first ie. flushing the g/box, new filter and gasket and original BMW g/box oil +some Lucas oil g/ box treatment. Should be within RM700. If it helps then yeayyyyyyyyy!!!!! If it doesn't then will look at a overhaul or transplant.

Bro, please use dextron VI ya since dexIII is no longer available N42 is equipped wz GM gearbox. Some workshop just pour zf fluid

I try to send my e46 325 to m-scope for checking but since there is no fault code, the boss ah hong also cannot help me to do anything. What else can I do?

Bro, what are your issues?

My issue is similar to others. For example, when u come out from roundabout, u try to accelerate, but the car will not accelerate, it will do nothing for 1 to 2 seconds and rpm will not go up. after 1 or 2 seconds then only it will accelerate n rpm goes up.

Another scenario, when decelerate n braking, the rpm will drop then rise 0.2 then drop then rise 0.2 etc

This is a used gearbox from half cut from Japan.

I also can hear either the engine or gearbox sound is louder than 6 months ago, especially when decelerate.

Inside the car can smell engine oil or burning oil smell. M-scope ask me to go check by Aircon people because maybe not tightly fixed. But I think even if u set the Aircon mode to allow outside air comes in, u should not smell engine burning smell right? So I think the engine or gearbox leaking? Burning oil? My engine eat oil n engine oil warning light comes out every 3,000km
