according to BMW manual for E46 on page 71, it says that

"add fuel in good time, or there is a risk of running the tank dry and causing damage to the engine or the catalytic converter"

what does it mean by add fuel in good time? anyone know? it also did not mention on fuel pump damage?
Good one. I guess its anyone's interpretation of what a "good time" is. I would think 1/4 mark will be "good" for me to look for the nearest petrol station. But YMMV (pun).

Does anyone think of EMERGENCY?
What happen if you need to send someone to hospital in case of emergency, fuel tank low warning. By the time you finish filling your tank the someone is no more in this world.

For me I always fill the fuel tank full or 3/4 full. Firstly is emergency case and secondly is to keep internal side of the fuel tank away from corrosion.

Finally, some wise words here. Thats why as i mentioned i keep a MINIMUM of 1/4 tank before i fill up again. And when i do fill up i mean FILL UP to the brim. If you fill less it just means you visit the petrol station more often. Mt time is precious so i prefer not to waste it in the queue or whatever. We still have subsidised petrol and its one of the cheapest in the world. So what the heck, i figured if there is any difference between 1/2, 3/4 or full, its insignificant to me. I'm still going to use it up at the end of the day. Moral: Just enjoy your UDM!
