Eddy,

You can go to Optimum Motorworks at Kayu Ara to replace your vanos seals as they keep stock of Beisan vanos seals kits. Optimum's boss is Jason Foo and his contact no is (012) 308-1891.

Thanks for the recommendation Herbert. I just got my car back from Optimum. Had the Beisan vanos seal changed. They also did some tuning as the engine setting was off. A lot of parts they have to dismantle before getting the vanos unit out. The old vanos seals were hardened up like plastic, no more elastic like rubber.

Anyway, I also had my engine oil and ATF fluid changed. The result: WOW ... the engine felt so light at low RPM. At idle at traffic light, it was so quiet and smooth that one could be fooled into thinking that the engine was off. The effects are thus immediately felt. What I'm keen to see is how it performs on the highway and the fuel consumption. I've been stuck at 25.6 MPG for the longest time. Lets see if it gets better after this. I suspect it would even if it's just from my being more light-footed now that the low RPM performance is so much better.

If you haven't changed your vanos seal before, highly recommended that you do it. Then only you realize what you've been missing all this while. Thank you Herbert for englightening us vanos seal change.

My fuel consumption has gone from 25.6 MPG to 25.4 MPG. Wrong direction. Oops !!!

I did mine last week. The timing was ok, therefore did not do anything except just change the vanos seals. The was no change in the power, but the lag when pressing the accelerator from slow speed is gone. Luckily for me no fault came up on the idrive. Will monitor over the next few weeks whether there is any improvement in the FC. Thanks Herbert..

Steven,

The lag that you experienced is actually referred to as "hesitation" and this is due to de-graded vanos seals. Whether it will improve FC is not solely dependent on vanos seals. Related components like pre-cat O2 sensors, MAF and other intake components system will also determine your FC plus your right foot.

May i know the actual cost incur to change the Vanos seal?Tq....:)

Double vanos group buy price was RM190. Optimum is selling them ready stock for RM300.

Labour is RM250.

Advise changing your valve cover gasket and grommets since its the same labour.

Hi Sifus
I'd just bought Beisan Double Vanos Seals recently from bmw7833 and am planning to had it changed. I've always monitor my fuel consumption and the latest reading was 9.2L/100km. I dont know whether this is a normal reading for BMW? Do you have an idea on the normal reading of BMW?

Looking at the fuel consumptions of fellow forumers, I am a bit skeptical to change the seals worried that my fuel consumption would not be as efficient as now.

Hi guys,
When is the next group buy or does anybody have one to sell? I can hear rattling sounds from my vanos. Appreciate all help. Thanks.

Rgds.

Got mine from the 7th batch group buy in July, a bit unwilling to get it replace as my mileage clock 55k. IMO its Beisan marketing strategy saying that the original BMW Vanos Seals give way at 35K Km.
Last week during my routine 65K service found a bit of oil leak from the engine, hence replace the gasket together with Beisan Vanos Seals.

The harden original vanos seals.
The torque improve significantly especially between 1000-3000rpm. But FC at 14.8l/100km compare to previous 13.6l/100km. Will up date FC when the seals run in.

According to Beisan http://beisansystems.com/procedures/vanos_procedure.htm, there no need to use special tools for adjust camshaft timing when replacing double vanos seals on for 325i E46 M54 engine but some people say special tools are required. Bros, could you please explain me whether special tools required or not because i want do it myself. Thanks

Yes, you need a special tool to lock the cam in the TDC position when removing the double vanos assembly. The special tool also will confirm whether the inlet and exhaust cams are in the right position after the vanos seal have been replaced. In the event of the cam not in the correct position, part of the tool also allow the adjustment of the cam.

I just paid RM265 for a 3 hours job in replacing the double vanos seal. Well worth the money considering that the mechanic have to remove many things just for seal replacement.

btw, mechanic say easier to work with E39 cos got more space.

Here is the special tool for adjusting the cams and timing.
