Collecting my new f30 for another two weeks and need some advice.I'm not a hardcore fan but just want very good quality sound come out from the car. Budget about 2-4k.Was advised by some shop to just change to focal k2 4" component set would be enough and wont void the warranty. Price about 2k.Later another shop offered the same focal speakers for 1.5k, and ask me to consider german maestro 4" component set ev4008 ( also wont void the warranty ) and is about 2.5k and mentioned two grade higher than focal.Anyone have any idea? I want to know whether both of this speaker is good and wont void the warranty and any recommendation for reliable shop with good price?

Isn't the stock system in the F30 good enough? It easily costs more than those focal's you plan to change to and should perform way better unless you plan on doing a SQ setup.

Advice would be not to waste your cash. You may just end up with a result not to your liking.

I think you can upgrade to Alpine system directly at BMW dealers. Warranty intact I suppose.

agreed that f30 sound system although may not be the best is better than in many other car sound systems

I am happy with the sound system, but am not picky so different ear maybe hear differently

I think sound quality is really an individual thingy. Some people spend anything more than RM20k on home souund system while many are happy with just the ipod. As for me, I look for sharpness, stereo surrounding effects, strong/balance between bass and trebble - this requires a system which is powerful enough to deliver the sound, I think f30 is strong enough. Then again depending on what music you listen to...classical music for instance seldom require strong bass/drum effect as compared to techno and rave. Last but not least is the hifi sound source, the correct format, etc....even mp3 have different quality - depending on where you get it from. If from internet, esp. youtube to mp3, I would recommend a HD version.

Depends on which F30.. the 335's Harman Kardon is awesome :top:

not sure about 328i or 335i. 320i ones memang terrible. teribble to the max.

Anyone knows how much is the Alpine system upgrade at BMW dealers? Anyone has done it? Can share with us how it compare to the stock system.

Hi Ken85

Not sure which F30 you're getting. But the system came with my 320d was quite rubbish really. I've not heard 328i & 335i ones but I'm guessing they should be much better and not sure if it's worth changing.

I changed mine to Focal K2 component too. They charged me RM1.8k for the set which includes 2xtweeter, 2xmids & 2xcrossovers.
I tried listening to these sets driven directly by BMW headunit, it definitely has more clarity with the tweeter included. But overall it wasn't really a lot better.
So the shop owner recommended that I add an audio processor & an amp to drive it. I paired it with AudioControl LCQ-1 & Alpine PDX 2-Channel Amplifier.
The LCQ-1 I paid about RM1.5k if I recall correctly. The Alpine PDX series amp was a second hand unit but condition is brand new. I got it for RM800.
The end result after the guys done the tuning. It was much much better. It really sound great right now. The next thing I might do is to change my amp to a 4-channel to drive the subs as well. The amp is currently only driving my mids.
I know many people changed away their BMW subs, but the shop told me there is no need to do that if I just change my amp. Which is a cheaper alternative also if I already have all my audio processors and amps. He was willing to take back the second hand Alpine amp at same price. So I might change to a Focal 4-Channel amp later on.

I did consider the Gladen kit offered by Eurotuner. I haven't got the chance to test this though so can't comment on this. But they're able to get the frames to put your tweeter on the A-pillar. Mine is currently sitting on the dashboard. I feel it kinda spoil my clean BMW dashboard look, but it was quite tiny and you'll get used to it. Though I still wish I could get it done like those Eurotuner guys did on other F30s.

My budget started around 2-4k too. But ended up spending about 5k. T_T

Hope this gives you some idea! :)
Though I think the warranty part if you just changed the speakers, it'll only void your speakers warranty. But for what I did, I may have void the entire audio system warranty? I'm still not quite sure... Anyone has any idea?

ooo.. this never ending ice journey just like motorsports..
bro kent, not to discourage but if u r not planning on a SQ setup, i second what bro insomniac suggested.
you may wish to audit the Gladen kit before pulling your trigger. Nothing much you can do on a pair of 4" mid. happy searching bro..

bro crescent, congrat on your upgrade.. since you've LCQ-1 installed, maybe u can discuss with your installer a 2 way active setup next time when u upgrade to 4ch amp; leaving the sub with another 2ch amp? just my opinion, enjoy your music bro..

the 320d and 320i sound system is crap. just compare with the system fitted in 328i. forget the Harman Kardon in 335i.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, many different opinion from friends in this forum.

Thats what i thought for focal actually, then this guy told me to consider german maestro ev4008 as it is 2 grade higher than focal. And later add the jbl ms-8 dsp should solve my listening problem.

Im trying to avoid spending too much, but seems like u mention the focal only didnt satisfied u n hav to go for amp and dsp.

A little confused now as some say change some say dont and u mentioned just the component is not enough.. Hmmmphh

Bro... you can try Tenichi Audio at PJ Highway Centre.

Either to recommend just speaker replacements or you can test their in-house developed audio setup which will suit your requirement of nothing over the top.

Good thing is their reputable and known for audio. The boss drives a e39 station wagon as well last I went there a couple of years back.

m-sports, just wondering what do you mean by 2 way active setup? Sorry still quite noob with car audio. :)
Does it mean 2 active amps driving the speakers separately? I first wanted to trade in my 2ch amp for a 4ch. which will then drive the front-mids and subs. Are you suggesting that I should try instead leaving the 2ch amp to drive my subs and the 4ch to drive the front and rear mids? I think that should fully utilised my 6ch LCQ-1 right? Thanks bro in advance!

You can try going to KF Audio in Aman Suria. Look for Mr.Siemen Liew, the owner. He'll generally be very happy to consult you on what you can do with your budget.
I don't think the real issues are with the Focal or German Maestro speakers. The main fault kinda lies within the headunit itself. I was told that BMW basic headunit generally produces clean signal but weak. Hence the recommendation of the amp.
I wanted to spent on changing my rear speakers to those mids+tweeter type. But he asked me not to waste money on those and spend it on an amp instead.
That's because generally I mostly drive alone or with my soon-to-be wife. Also, I only listen to music louder when I'm alone. So there's not much need for me to drive the rear speakers much. Mr.Liew said my front units are more than enough to satisfy the listeners at the back too if I have. Then again...I guess it's individual preference. I generally am very very happy with his suggestion. He's good at turning cheap speakers sounds good. LOL. That's what I was told when a few friends recommended me that shop few years back. My F30 is the second car he did for me.

Definitely check Tenichi Audio out. I heard a friend's system after tuning and it was good! The ori 320d (and presumably the 320i) system is for sure crap, although you need to give it some time to burn in. It would sound a little better after a few months. The ori door speakers are absolute rubbish. My portable radio player has better speakers. Speakers that fit without some modifications (a spacer and some drilling) are hard to find as the space between the door and the window is very small and there are only 3 screws where most speakers have holes for 4 screws.

Have a look at this thread, it makes an interesting read.

I heard the tehnichi 320 demo car, its really good, great clarity for mids and highs but a bit lacking for bass.

The setup was only a change in speakers and tuning. for that bundle they promo it at around 5k

To add an amp and sub , another 5K. If you go for the full setup at 10K, it sounds awesome ...

Planning to do my 528 when i get it early july
