hi lightbulb, i have changed my front speakers+tweeters to a nice component set.
fit directly into the tweeter position, and mid unit fitted into door without needed to cut the metal part.

job was done at KF at damansara, PM me if you need more details.

price wise, very reasonable for Boston Acoustics set :) (i believe cheaper than u buying stock HK speaker/tweeter from BMW)
workmanship is top class too

i got my mechanic to give bavarian auto a call to check for replacement tweeter. its a whopping RM400 a piece......

you mentioned about KF. arent they in aman suria? how much did the component set costed you?

finally, changed my front H/K 3-way to boston 2-way.

it was a cheap fix, but the quality seems to have been compromised.

if youre talking about bass wise, i think you feel compromised as stock h/unit cannot power certain component set well enough.
hence not playing as per designed.

not so much about the bass. it seems that vocal is somewhat lacking. probably due to the way the system was designed to do 3-way, but now since 2-way, certain frequency has been ommitted.

nevertheless, rather this way than a busted speaker =D

Yes I agree to that, the HK system has amplifier for each speaker and the output of each has been filtered properly (woofer - lows, midbass - mids, tweeter - highs). While the boston assume all frequencies to be available at the input and uses its own crossover. Since the vocal information has been filtered out for the woofer speaker, you'll hear less of it. So the Bostons are driven by the woofer speaker output at the door?

Solution is to modify the HK amplifier to remove the filters or replace the 10-channel HK amp to aftermarket 4-channel one. Hope this make sense

Cheers

aidilj, I have busted woofers at the front. SO I have replaced them with Boston 2-way components too, leaving the original mid-range. I did not use the Boston x-over since the signals are already x-overed at the amplifiers. Sound much better now but can do with a little extra bass.

I would like to seek your advice. I am looking at getting the HLG 8788GB DVD/GPS/etc which claim to have a sub-woofer output , can it actually drive a sub-woofer ? or I will need the all-in-one type of sub.

What about changing the transistor amplifier in the amp itself to better match the impedance of my speakers.

I see that youve made the decision to go the Hualingan way not carputer. Sorry for the late reply but I'm struggling to find spec sheet for the head unit, it is probably here somewhere.

Yes bass is lacking, I've added a sub and happier now. I don't understand your current setup, if youre not using the x-over then how is the component tweeter driven? does the Boston tweeter replace the existing tweeter at the pillar?

The output of the Hualingan for sub is not amplified, you'll need to get an amp to drive a sub or get as you mentioned - all-in-one sub (subwoofer and amp boxed together).

Yours is a hifi set if I'm right, should be able to drive 2ohm fine,so going to 2ohm speakers would be the best. Driving a 4ohm speaker in your setup would give half the total power. 2ohm transistor amplifier from 12v is the best I've seen so far, so you should work to match speakers to the amplifier instead. Again, in stock form, rear deck speaker would be able to drive most bass compared to front speakers due to lack of air box at the front door panel.

Hope this answers your question.

old man like me , got enthusiasm but lack time and will. So Carputer is off. I got in touch with HLG, can get very very reasonable price. I already got the reverse camera some time back.

Mine is HIFI setup where the cross-over is built into the amplifier, replaced the tweeters too.
