Bro Jarance,
My E46 has 10 speakers , so should be the Active HiFI system.

So there is an amplifier too ? with built-in cross-over ? for Active HIFI

Thanks

See the word "Harmon Kardon" on the dash board? :top:

no HK, so I guess it is the HIFI version.
In BMWfans.info , there are 3 version (Stereo, HIFI and HK) and I think HIFI and HK have amps, right ?

Perhaps I should open up the trunk (did not get a chance to look at that when I change my rear shocks).

I wonder if any member/forumer has faulty/unwanted midbass speakers of E46 (HiFi, 10 speakers version) still sitting around in the store room somewhere.

If I can just borrow it , I am thinking of using it for the fabrication of some adapters to fit aftermarket speakers to the original positions.
Many thanks.

my model came with the HK set. my front speakers could be broken i think (buzzing/distortion noise at specific frequency). can i just swap with with any brands available? any recommendation of audio shops that i can visit?

or should i just have the speakers repaired?

i believe will need to remove door panel?

Hey LiteBulb,

Yes you can swap with any brands available as long as the impedance are the same as original one. Rarely speakers are repaired, they are made of paper/plastic and glue, they are not meant to be reassembled after being disassembled. If you're still running with factory speaker, please look to upgrade to aftermarket, it will sound much better, you will thank me later. Yes the front speaker is mounted on the door panel so it will need removing.

Here are some picture of my front speaker swap, hope it would be useful, cheers.

how much would a replacement roughly cost? i am not looking at some high end speakers, just a descent one that wouldnt give me a lower quality than what i already have.

Speakers would cost around 200 to 400 ringgit I think. Also you have a tweeter at the door column, I'm not using that one, it is left unconnected. If you buy components then it will come with a tweeter so you can replace the one at the door column as well.

Knowing a little more will help you decide better, cheers.

thanks. any recommendation on audio shops that i can visit? a shop that will not slaughter?

aidilj, looks like your is the so called stereo with 4 ohm midbass, my Hi-Fi comes with amp and 2 ohm midbass. HK will have 3 ohms midbass.

thanks. i have just got back from a shop and was told that it was my tweeter that has gone bad. i will have to change the whole set (tweeter + mid unit) as it will be difficult to source just the tweeter.

should anyone have a spare tweeter for sale, do let me know =)

i am on the harman/kardon system.

hi lightbulb, i have changed my front speakers+tweeters to a nice component set.
fit directly into the tweeter position, and mid unit fitted into door without needed to cut the metal part.

job was done at KF at damansara, PM me if you need more details.

price wise, very reasonable for Boston Acoustics set :) (i believe cheaper than u buying stock HK speaker/tweeter from BMW)
workmanship is top class too
