Engine overhaul for e30 M40...

Just to ask, my car recently got white smoke, but only when starting the car. Is this a sign of head gasket leaking? Because I have a very minor oil leak which my mech says is from the head gasket (it's very slowly seeping from the side near the firewall and onto my transmission).

if they smoke while warming up in the morning is no cause for worry.. all my 3 cars like that. minor leaks on head gasket is common too, especially when you redline often. not too many people are in a hurry to fix minor head gasket leaks..

It's like this, if you spend your hard earned money to rebuild your M40, display it in your living room. LOL!

You have received many accurate feedbacks from the members here concerning the M40.

This engine has engineering design flaws in its camshaft and lifters design. All the problems that you are facing with your current engine will return in around 12 months. I have rather extensive experience with m40s frm both the e30 and e36, and my only advise is to replace it when it gets sick. IT IS NOT COST EFFECTIVE TO REBUILD A M40B18.

If you really enjoy the character of the M40, look for a used unit...

mizhan: It's not just on cold starts (after sitting overnight). Sometimes when I drive to my mech's place from Taman Tun to Old Klang Road and stop the car there, then when I started it again to go home, he also noticed white smoke still.
I'm not in a rush to do a top overhaul either and can just top up engine oil every now and then, but doing that can get abit expensive, I might switch back to good ol' GTX 20w-50 instead of the pricier Magnatec.

kevster: When my mechanic told me that if I wanna replace head gasket, it might as well be a top overhaul around RM1.5k, my thoughts also turned to M42 instead lol. :lol: But I think for now, I'll just leave it be haha.

Sounds to me like you have a weak valve seal, don't loose any sleep over it. It's completely acceptable for an engine it's age. Smile and continue enjoying your ride!:top:

Change valve seal no need top overhaul. Valve seal is only few Ringgit each.. multiply by the number of valves plus labor. If not wrong, just open the valve cover can perform the job d. Header no need buka. The smokes are thickening your exhaust, very good anti rust.. :wink:

Good to have some reassurance there. Do you think it would be better to switch back to a mineral oil then? I've been recently thinking that 15w-40 Shell HX5 or 20w-50 Castrol GTX might be a better choice for an old M40 than semi-synths. Especially as my commute is usually stop-go traffic and short distances, my oil gets dirty fast, so frequent changes is better.
