E90 engine oil low

Bro, mine have the same issue upon collecting my car. It's due to old 0-30 oil, once changed to ravenol 5-40 issue gone. After 5000km I changed to shell helix ultra 0-40 and it's down by 1/8 after 1000km will continue to monitor.

Bro my experience Shell Helix 5W - 40, burned very fast !
 
Previous owner has just informed me engine oil needs 1 liter topping up every 2 mths or 2k-3k km.

Of course, I'll change the oil when the lights come up next but after that.......?

Shld I consider vavle seal replacement?

How else to solve this problem?

Top up every 6-7k km may be acceptable but 2-3k km a bit too much isnt it?

My current top up may not even last 2 months.
 
Go check it out bro. 1 liter top up every 2k-3k km is not normal. I just came back from MSpeed. Had some leaks at the lower part (i.e. oil sump, o-ring, etc...). So got that fixed. But a lot of work (1 whole day) as need to remove transmission, exhaust, etc.... to reach the part. Also, found out sensor was faulty so changed that as well.

So you might also want to check out your sensor. So far with new sensor- travel 30 minutes and it still shows MAX. With old sensor, upon start up about 5 mins, will show MAX; after 15 mins HALF, then about 30 mins "MIN". If your sensor shows such symptoms, best get it changed. RM280 at MSpeed.

I am due for oil change any time now. Just waiting to see when the warning light for top up comes on.

I'll then do my service and change oil and filter.

I got Mobil 1 0w-40 from Tesco several mths back when it had a promo....rm139.

I'll see how it goes from then. I hope the engine oil consumption improves.

Otherwise, i'll have to open her up......aduhhhhh!!!!!

Be careful about topping up. First time that happened (i.e. warning sensor), I topped up 1 liter. Then when warning happened again about 1 week later, I topped up another liter. Then I thought the leak was getting really bad. Then light came again few days later. This time I topped up about 500ml only to test. True enough, despite the top-up, warning still came up after 30mins driving IMMEDIATELY after top-up. Leak can't be that bad as to lose 500ml in one 30min drive!

In the end, while there was a leak, because of the faulty sensor, I ended up topping up too much! Mech told me about 6+ liters oil in the engine (supposed to be 4.5liters only)! Leak was not serious, though i fixed it for peace of mind. Was actually faulty sensor giving those top-up warnings.
 
Oh ya, why I was so gung-ho about topping up was also because I bought that same Tesco Mobil One for that cheap price :D
 
I just bought E90 2006 320i, my problem white smoke after idle the engine 5 min and ramp one cloud of white smoke not only morning, at every time idle
mech said the valve seal problem, it will take 2 days for replace the seal. At the workshop oil sensor show chk engine "OK" after one hour back to home
chk engine show +1l. Mech ask to wait after CNY to replace the seal, do I need to top up the oil now or just use until repair ....ant advise.
 
My 325i wanted another liter after 7k. Poured 1 liter of 5w-40 shell helix. Will change to other oil, maybe petronas during next service.

Bro, let your engine cool down overnight, top up 1 litre and then drive for maybe 30 mins or so. You should see level around MAX maybe after 10 mins. If after 1 hour, you get the +1L warning, then maybe your sensor is conk. Normally not possible to lose so much oil after just 30 mins.....unless really bocor badly. Like my case, always show +1L after 30 mins. I topped up too much that I had about 2L extra oil in the engine. Definitely not good....

AHHH crap... this is whats happening to my 07' e90.

engine oil keep going down before 1 month, white smoke when my car is idle.

RM3k for valve seal? :(

Is it hazardous to continue driving without getting this fixed?

My car 06 325i was inspected at AB early Dec. Previous owner topped up engine oil during inspection.

Its now about 1 month and > 1000km later. Checked engine oil level and its 2/3 down. 1/3 b4 next top up. Need to keep an eye on this.

Car is due for oil change soon. I"ll change the oil when the top up lights come up next and then monitor it. Hopefully i dont have this problem.

Otherwise its open heart surgery time for the engine.


The warning lights is triangle-shaped with an exclamation mark in it?

Yup same as mine 325i 2007, normally at 6500 km there is a reduction of 250 ml, if i don't top up, the +1 sign will appear around 7500 km. But I normally top up 250 ml at each reduction (I assume +1 is eexactly 1 ltr, so at half point is 500 ml), just to be safe on the engine. I've been using shell helix ultra 5w 40 too, i thought the oil is thick enough?. If browsing through bmw thread worldwide, reduction in oil is normal, but premature loss at 2000 to 3000 km is indeed worrying.

Thanks for the info bro kama. Now changed to Mobil 1 5w-50. Let's see whether need to top up before next service. At least can compare the oils. Have been reading that to top up 1liter after 7+k is normal too.
 
Mobil 1 5W-50 could be too thick for the engine to perform to its full performance and efficiency. If not mistaken it was not endorsed as BMW Long Life oil or even A3/A4 compliance
 
Dear Bro,

I am facing same problem here.White smoke if ideal with engine ON for 10 to 15 mins.This issue is just happen after my service .During my last service I change

Transmission oil and the filter + 3 gasket due to oil leak ( RM 3K).But I was suspecting my valvetronic motor.Because during my previous service the said there is

some error shows that my motor is not in good condition. Since I read all your experience maybe my valve seal issue.I am also need to top up 1L every 2 to 3K KM.

I must standby another RM 3K.:eek:
 
my car problem is settled...it was valve seal problem due to change...tested about 2months from december 2012 -february 2013 and 5000km ++ fully syn oil, no more asap putih and no more loss engine oil.
service done by Fastlane (mini cooper) at Tmn Mayang PJ. the cost is about rm1k++.
 
I use Liqui Moly 5W40 Top Tech for the past 8000 km. So far no top up needed. I think it's good for my N52B25 engine.
