That is a decent price to pay for such a continental car. But bimmers are known for their high maintenance cost. Which parts are the costly ones?

Hi Guys..

Just bought a 318ci 2.0cc M-Sport with 32,000km recond jap spec, is it necessary to send my car for major service at BMW service centre? wat kind of service my car need to undergo? all sifus please advice. Thanks

-kEnNy-

Hi Kenny,
Yes, you are advisable to send your car to nearby service center. Refer to my earlier posted, BMW required to service every 25kkm interval base on default setting. However to ensure your car at best performance when driving, it would appreciated if you can have a minor service every 12kkm. This will only cost you RM 500++. Quick tip for you to identify whether your engine oil is Ok or not regardless the mileage. Pull up the engine oil lid and see whether have black jelly surrouding the circle. If yes, service is required.

Hi Riezal,

Nice to meet you in this forum
Quick tip on the service base on AB requirement.
Default setting when u insert the key before start the engine, it will prompt you your car lifetime. It will countdown from 25kkm to 0. This is to trigger you everyday when you are required to service. But, if u not service at AB, this will not appear at your odometer when insert the key. Normal service shop only put "Next Service" sticker which normally pasted at the front mirror.

Even default setting at 25kkm interval, my friend whom is BMW engineer base in Penang advise to change the engine oil every 12kkm. This is to avoid your engine oil become jelly and block inside. For your info BMW engine temperature is 120*C at normal condition with the monitor needle stand at center in between hot and cold. For your benchmark normal car like Proton temperature only 85*C.

Next is the coolant water to stabalize your radiator. Do you know that, we need to top up the water every 3 weeks. If not please open your car bonet now and check the water level. For safety, make sure your engine cool down first due to high temperature as mention above. Caution, if u stand at your car number plate u will see quater circle on top left and right. Left is your brake liquid controller and right is electric control unit ( ECU ). Please ensure that water not spread at this 2 portions because it will cost you RM 10K for each items. As a reminder especially when u send your BMW for engine wash.

My bill

FYI, done some minor repair of my E46 N42 and hope to share with all members.

1) 11287524267 Tensioner $300
2) 12147518628 Intake camshaft sensor $350
3) 17127506128 Top water hose $200

Labour inclusive replacing sensor, tensioner, topwater hose, fan belt, erase and reset fault code after repairing. $100

TOTAL $950 done in Ipoh New Age Auto
 Feeling the hose a bit expensive but the rest ok especially the labour very reasonable.

Just got my 2001 E46 325 few days back. Sent it to Ah Meng today. Knew him already from friends who have bimmers and I go there at times with them just to chat with him.

Anyway, my first damage (note Ah Meng always lumps his prices together with labour):

1. Engine oil + filter : RM300
2. Front brake pad : RM160
3. Oil level sensor : RM370
4. MF Battery : RM430
5. ATF oil change + filter +gasket: RM600

Didn't want to leave car there overnight so will be another round as still some items left over like engine mounting & lower arms.

Might be down to individual preference but I find Ah Meng to be a nice chap who takes care in his work. He takes trouble to explain things to you and never forces anything on you.

As for the pricing, well as a newbie, I have to start somewhere. So here's hoping someone can tell me if what I paid is reasonable, or whether I'm being taken advantage of.

Cheers all! Enjoying finally being a true UDM member.......

from what i read here.. it seems that to me the cost of mantaining the udm not so high.. the most contributed is engine oil.. other seems reasonable.. not diff from japs or even waja/perdana...

but.. maybe on major repairs/engine prob would on hi-side.. but again.. others japs or plotong oso hi-priced...

anybody can tell me BMW cost on this (comparison with my late waja)

1) Power window: RM550
2) Timing belt: RM650 (E46 got timing chain rite? so maybe RM0 for that?)
3) ECU: RM6000.. hmmm... (mine not change..just remap)
4) radiator: RM350..

any comparison on that EON price? hmmm...

2nd round of repairs. Needed 2 day at workshop for the drive shaft repair.

1. Drive shaft repair: RM400
2. Engine mounting: RM400
3. Lower arm: RM1400

Now car is running as smooth as can be expected from a 6 year old car. Looking forward to really testing the car out now. Hopefully nothing breaks in that process :D

Hi, congratulations on your purchase...welcome to the world of the UDMs...

what was the drive shaft repair?

Just what it says: repair on the drive shafts. Ah Meng said that it could still be repaired, so a much prefered option rather than a few grand for new ones. He couldn't do it, so he had to take it to someone else to repair. That's why car needed to spend the night away from me *sob sob*

Still, interesting (and scary!) to see all the parts (like drive shafts, lower arms) lying on the floor while your car is being jacked up. I am getting more appreciation and knowledge about how the car is built now.

i just sent E46 318 facelifted for service this is the casualty which kinda ok
Oil service Helix Ultra
Oil flter, inspections, diagnostic, balancing and alignment - RM470
Put a reverse sensor for - RM480 (this my wife demanded it...before she comes back with a dent)

I was asking the mech shud i change this and that ...and he says everything is ok after checking. wanted to change my atf and all, he says its only brownish color and still can be used until the next oil service...(kinda shocked really with all the potong kepala going on). current mileage is 72k. what do u guys think

Hi,

just wanted to know what was the symptoms which lead to the diagnosis that there was something wrong with the shaft? was it the freeplay of the long shaft?

appreciate your sharing of the experience

regards

err... no such thing leh. As part of the process of buying my car, I took it to Ah Meng. After a thorough check, he mentioned that drive shaft needed repair. To me, I did not notice anything wrong when I drove the car, but was not going to wait until the thing goes kaput! Also, after having being told that drive shaft was not in perfect shape, I did not push the car hard then.

If I was going to change a new part, then I would have driven until thing conk or almost conk. But since a repair was recommended, I decided not to let it deteriorate further before repairing it.

Anyone experienced drive shaft failure before?

From my experience, my 325 drive shaft just gave in suddenly. The car shake slightly which I thought it was a gearbox failure. As I floor the pedal it feels like something knocking the lower body coming from the back seat as I drive harder. So quickly drove to my regular workshop and he said my drive shaft rosak.

Wow...scary. Ah Meng did tell me to look for those symptoms. He said was up to me if I wanted to repair it or not. If not, I can try my luck and see how long it would last.

So mate, did you manage to repair the shaft? Or had to replace it?

Well, luckily my mechanic said that he will repair it. So he took out the drive shaft and change something and replace some bushes. He quote me rm500++ for it. rm200 for tat something and rm300 for bushes.

GRAND TOTAL ========== 728

E46 318i 2.0

Sry I cant rem wat r the things done on my car and too lazy to find the bill but every time the service cost me 1k to 1.5k in total. Luckily I onli nid to service once or max 2 times a year... how long u guys get to service your cars, once a yr as well? My uncle drive his E36 328i onli for work n seldom travel, onli get to service his car 1 time every 2 yrs !!!!

I plan to service every 10,000km, which would be around 8-9 month's period. Personally I feel 25,000km (which might take me 2 years!) is too long (the period needed to reach it, not the mileage per se itself) given the humidity and heat of our climate. But most guys can hit 25,000km in a year or so, which is fine.
