Last night my son 2003 E46 with M54B22 engine and ZF5HP19 transmission refuse to move. Sign of oil can been seen on the floor. Towed the car to Kayu Ara. I've been told gear box oil pump is the culprit. Damaged. Drain the gear box oil and there is a trace of metal debris stick to the magnet in transmission pan. The car has show sign of gear box going to fail like jerking when droping gear and limp mode appear couple of week back. After the limp mode, I cleared the fault code and the car running fine. Decide to change gear box oil and filter after that. It survive our MFest to Genting as well.1. Option 1 - Change the gear box oil pump and some stuff with labour about 2.6k2. Option 2 - Rebuilt gear box 8 - 9kNeed advise on from sifu who has done the rebuilt before and your experience. I've been told that original torx converter for 2.2 is small. I should upgrade to 2.5 torx converter. I was made to understand you can upgrade to 2.8 torx converter as well. Which one best upgrade to? What is the impact. Mechanic said 2.5 is enough. He said 2.8 torx converter gear shift is rather rough.Your advise is very much appreciated.

Bro, if I remember correctly, GB rebuild should be only around the range of 6-7k, depending on items changed, as quoted by M-Scope Batu Caves.

yeah.....rebuild gearbox should be around RM6K-RM7k..Last time i ask at M One Power Workshop at Cheras Dutamas near Columbia Asia Balakong....

I think you can get it done at better rates. Try to call & discuss with Collin 0192644097. My E38 G/box was overhauled by them. So far no issues.

"Kayu Ara" has open the gearbox pan to check the metal debris yesterday. I don't feel good to as him to take the car back and send elsewhere. He gave me one year warranty for the gb rebuilt. I guess I need to nego the price with him.

For 6k, here are the parts replaced + labour:

1. Gearbox overhaul kit
2. Oil pump
3. Solenoid switches
4. Auto filter
5. Oil cooler
6. Service valve body
7. Service torque converter
8. Labour
9. Gear selector switch (optional - add extra 900 for this)

I wonder how the workshop could serviced the torque converter as the unit is completely sealed.

Err no idea Herbert. Is it normally serviceable or it's just a direct replacement once it fails?

A couple of local companies do provide rebuilt ZF/GM torque converters but apparently the quality of spot welding is of concerned. It is always recommended to buy replacement (rebuilt) directly from ZF/GM.

Hello bro wingzee....

I have sold my car but still prowl these pages...heh heh..

Bro Zidee,

Perhaps i can help shed some light:
Basic cost of rebuilt is approx RM6.1k and includes the following as per what bro wingzee has stated but i have added in a few details:

The 'Basic' rebuilt:
1. Gearbox overhaul kit
2. Oil pump
3. Solenoid switches - not all will be changed, only faulty/weak ones.
4. Auto filter
5. Oil cooler
6. Service valve body
7. 'Service' torque converter
8. Labour
TOTAL For 'Basic' Rebuilt = RM6.1k

However, when i drove the car, it was discovered that my torque converter is not in good condition and vibrates. This is a problem that the mere 'servicing' above cannot cure. Hence....I changed to a rebuilt torque converter. they basically splice open the torque converter into half and re-glue the 'skin/lining' inside before welding it back. It will still not be perfect but is good enough (you can consider this, as a rebuilt unit from ZF costs a whole lot more).

9. Rebuilt torque converter TOTAL = RM700 (approx, cant recall exact amount)

In the meantime I also changed the gear selector switch while they are at it. This part is prone to water seeping in and is a matter of time that it needs to be changed.

10. Gear selector switch - TOTAL = RM900 (approx depending on half cut or new from BA)

Hence to get the perfect rebuilt gearbox you need to have Basic RM6.1k + RM700 + RM900 = RM7.7k. Right about where your shop quoted.

My suspicion is they have factored in the ZF rebuilt torque converter cost into the quote (more exp than the normal rebuilt) but not the Gear Selector switch as that is considered seperate.

Hope this helps?

In case you all need any auto used part, can contact me & aidilj as we have most of the item after converting to manual gearbox.

Thanks guys. I have been quote figure as below :

1. Gear box kit (ori ZF) 2900
2. Fly wheel oil seal 100
3. Oil pump 840
4. Repair torx converter 1200
5. Filter 100
6. ZF fluid 55 x 9 = 495
7. Labour 2000

Total : 7,635

Warranty 1 year

On the big ticket items, I was made to understand that gear box kit should be about 2k only. I also made to understand that gearbox specialist typically charge about 1.3 for labour. Anybody can verify this?
