E46 door lock mechanism rattling

My rear (both) door lock (central lock) mechanisms are rattling heavily....even on a straight smooth road. There's something inside those things that are rattling......and there's no way to get at it. My mechanic can't even open the damn thing. I've been told that replacing them is very expensive. Is that true?

I change my left rear door lock mechanism.
Cant remember how much exactly but it was abt RM600 - RM 700
Reason for changing, when open door, lights dont turn on and
it does not appear on speedometer panel.
Otherwise central lock was working perfectly.
