Yes it is sealed.

When the flap is fully open, the flap will stick at the edge of the casing.

If you observed carefully, you will see that the side of the casing is polished. Also the circle part (green part) of the vane is also filed down to prevent the edge from sticking and rubbing on the wall of the casing.

The hard part is removing the cover. Many people try and many people failed to open the cover.

but there is a way to open it.

see below pic.

In order to file the green vane (circle part), you have to remove the black rubber stopper. This will give you a small gap to allow the needle file to be insert for filing down the edge that is touching the casing body.

Bro Jarance, you're really trully Sifu lar... thanks for sharing info... :top:

Ah ok, so you file down the edge that runs along the inner wall, and this is the same inner wall that you polished as well right? Do you file just the top or along the entire height of the flap?

Last question, what did you use to seal the cover back on once done? :)

Thanks for the info!

Just file along the entire height of the flap (vertical part). You dont need to file along the top (or bottom) as it is not touching the casing cover.

Just open or flip the flap to fully open and see where is the flap stuck.

It there are scratch mark on the casing, then you might to polish that part.

To seal back, you can either used liquid gasket between the casing and the cover or you can use silicon on the outside casing.

rough idle when start

tried cleaning my afm on my car (m42)...

now whenever i start the engine.. it idles roughly to a point almost died for about a minute... then it will be okay..

once okay.. can feel the smoothness...

anyone got this experience before??

another question.. is the afm for m42 and m43 different?? cos i have 2 diffrent afms... one with the adjuster and another one without.. i presume its for m43?? are they interchangeable??

thx sifus for all the help

My AFM have a small hole on the vane. I think it quite normal for M40 engine.

see pic below.

oh... but in my afm the hole was closed with small screw. so, i'll just remove it......

Better keep it there.. If it is original, dont meddle with it.

BTW, my AFM is for E36. your is E30. so there is a slight difference in the AFM.

So how did you remove the cover?

tried to remove the cover once but failed miserably. Had my AFM repaired 3 times within a year before had to finally change the thing. Repairing the AFM lasted only for a few months for me.

OIC, you did not open the AFM cover. So I presume that you just spray some lubricant to clean it. This does not last very long. I have done the filing and it last me for a couple of year.

Of course you have to remove the seal first before you can open it. Forgot to mention it.

BTW, did your vane struck when it is fully open.

Did you service your AFM because you have erratic speed. just curious to know.

Thanks for the feedback.. cheers

i service mine in hope it'll cure the shuttering problem while rpm comes to 2.5k. also noticed the vane stuck (but soft) while open by finger.

;).........

enjoyable servicing.... end-up sad

the action + sad story...

after service my afm and before fixing back to my car, tot of changing the valve cover gasket due to leaking.
so, went to BA, grap the gasket and ready to action. and suddently distributor cap crossed my mind. so open the cap, remove the rotor.

Using a flat head sdriver and sand paper i scrubed away the plugs(dirt) on the 4 contact points and the rotor

then replace the new valve cover gasket, fix back the afm and the distbtor cap.

after finish all, with strong confident i try to start. u guys know wht happen???? my sayang DIDNT START.
keep on cranking only.

and here my suspects

1) AFM itself- how to check using multimeter the condition? or anyother way?...
(* i did bend the wiper-like arm inside afm to create new track on the carbon film..)

2) distributor cap.
:- i afraid tht i over scrub and sand the points and rotor. how to check the distrbr condition?

i was insert screwdriver in to the cable head which comes from the ignition coil and then crank the engine, only one spark noticed.

did the same test but insert the scrwe into the point n1,2,3 and 4 at the distributor cap.. no spark nothing at all

--The firing order from bottom should be 1-3-4-2 isnt it?
