Hello,I own a 1996 E36 318i (Auto) with 120k miles.Problem: While idling (and only while idling), the rpm will intermittently drop down to the 500rpm line and seems the engine loss of power. This normally happens after the car has been started and running for a few minutes (warm). It is triggered by one of the following load conditions (at idle): 1. putting the car in reverse (sometimes the engine dies) or drive. 2. pressing the power window button. 3. turning the steering wheel to the end in one direction or the other. 4. it gets very annoying especially when A/C compressing.Sometimes the idle will drop down to (or below) the 500 rpm mark and return back to where it was. After driving and coming to a stop (idle), the rpm will sometimes be normal (650-750) and other times it will be low (

correct , very high chances it's the AFM . try to service / clean it first . it's 10 min job . can even DIY - all you need is a rag cloth & WD40 .

Whoa... just experienced this. Was making u-turn outside my house, felt steering heavy then engine died... Will try to clean the AFM :)

If clean and cannot settle.... I have a fes chop shop AFM going for Rm400...

WD40 will leave an oily residue which will carbonise when the AFM goes through its burn cycle shortly after switch off. It best for temporary measure, but it'll work only for short term. I would prefer to use carb cleaner is the best. Let it dry then reinstall.

wat is AFM?
ICV = Idle Control Valve
AFM = Air Flow Meter - you can google to know the position. I think there even have step-by-step on youtube.
But if you feel like buying a new one, just get a soft rag and lightly clean that way.

Try cleaning the AFM and ICV first. M43's are prone to such issues after a certain period of time.

New AFM and ICV is expensive and will probably set you back around Rm1.8k and RM900 respectively:bawling:( based on current market rates).

I did that to my e34, cleaned idle regulating valve, throttle body and air flow meter sensor..idling is.very good now..seems cleaning them is the step u can do before changing to new parts..

Hi mate,

It'll most likely be your MAF, ICV and/or throttle body filled with carbon residue, as they are common with the idling issues on M4# enigines due to carbonization over the years.

With MAF, use alcohol based contact cleaner or maf cleaner... DO NOT use carb cleaner or wd40 as there might be a chance that it'll fry your MAF.... as it's an electrical component...

With the ICV and TB, remove it and use carb cleaner to clean it out.

Check out the website on pelican parts for articles on the TB, ICV and MAF locations and how-to's before going out buying new stuff... could be just dirty from mileage/years...

Regards
Tim.
