E36 Gear Box Problem

last i diagnost my E36, no gear box fault code but "speed motoring fault" come out. is there anybony experience on that?? . becoz i am afraid that actually my gbox no problem. previously my waja, speedo sensor problem also kacau gear box. we can see at speedo meter giler, but my e36 speedo meter seen macam ok. maybe sensor giler kot, becoz gear cant change also sometime. when i rev tekannn... changing gear ok.

just need to clarify first be4 dumm some money to my gearbox. heeheee

tomorrow if i am free, i will check using the powerfull diagnost tools at my another mechanic. it maybe will show the fault code. before this, i check using tak canggih punya diagnost tools so it shows in wording, not fault code. i will let u know if i getting the fault code.

just know i have discuss with my other mechanic, he said no need to overhaul, he will diagnose first, maybe just need to change the solenoid.. so we try to see tomorrow.

Then wish u good luck ......changing solenoid is much cheaper compared to overhauld ......

Btw u can bring ur thumbdrive tonite ....will copy one service manual for u ....All faulty code u can found inside the manual......

hi ferry , i have reply your pm , but i feel tht your engine is a m40, if so i dont think u can use my gear box coz mine is a m43 , maybe the sifu here can give some advice on this matter ?

this could be

1.not enough or dirty auto fluid
2.dirty auto filter
3.solenoid kong

to be precise go to auto bavaria n diagnos..from there u will know to repair.their machine really specifed what need to do..

but as them first how much the charges.after diagnos is up to u where u wanna fix it..

cheaper n more precise..

Finally my E36 gearbox problem solved. Last 2 day i diagnose the transmission system, finally i got the fault code. code 100 gear monitoring fault. the problem actually located at gear knob switch, they call it " selector switch " ( Yellow Color, u can see if u open the cover at gear knob area ) . after changing that part.... total my gearbox back to normal..

But after 2 days, my speed sensor pulak kong (fault code 20), .... haaahaaaa. after that i service gearbox, change ATF fuild again, check solenoid, 2 solenoid kong out of 5 solenoid and change secondhand speed sonsor.

LEga skitt raya niee....

Dear Sifus,
I have an issue with my gearbox only if I turn on the sports mode. When my e36 325i is in Economy mode, the gears shift smoothly and there is no jerking, no problem, kickdown works fine too. However, when I activate the sports mode, even if I just travel at 110km/h consistantly, the transmission light will come on and the car seems to be stuck in 4 gear. Once I stop the car, turn off the ignition, take out the key and restart the car in economy mode everything is fine again. Tried clearing the fault codes, but after erasing them, the computer diagnostic still show fault codes for the tranny. Can't know from the diagnostic what the exact problem is because the Mechanic said the car is not 100% supported by the software. Next step to troubleshoot will be to change the solenoid. Do you sifus think this will work? Any advice will be appreciated.

There is a button with an 'E' on it beside your gear lever. Push the button forwards and the 'S' should light up, indicating you're in sport mode. Press the button and the 'E' will light up, indicating it's in economy mode.

Be careful if you're using sport mode for the first time.

what i have done before. i have take time to get/see the fault code. 2 3 time i diagnose no fault code appear. 1 day i bring my udm to my mechanic at subang jaya, he test until the problem come, after that trus diagnose. than the fault indicator "gear monitoring" appear. his tool not changgih, so no fault code. next day i go to diagnose another mechanic which using changgih one, than the fault code appear, if am not mistaken, the fault code is 100 gear selector fault.

why not u try this method, if u are lucky, u can see the fault code.

correct me if am mistake, what i know and test, "E" mode for economy and for stardard driving, gear will change 1,2,3,4. "S" for super drive, normally use before overtake and gear will drop from 4th gear to 3rd gear. and it will lock last at 3rd gear, cannot change to 4th gear. once u press back to "E" after that the gear will change to 4th gear, depands on your speed and acceleration.

Amur, the explaination from Ferry is good enough! The Sport mode allow you to hold the gear eg: 3 gear for you to speed in order to overtake the car and Economy mode will allow you to cruise as normal as yours is 4 speed (1st gear, 2nd gear & so on)

Hmm....I think maybe my 3rd gear got problem then. Because if I manual push it from D to 3, the gearbox warnning lights will come on too. If I use it all the way in D no problem at all.......hmm.....

The symbol is snow...i assume use that for more traction during winter. but malaysia tak ada snow !!

Yes its for snow. But any sifu care to explain how it works better in snow? Since our gearbox doesn't comes with traction control right?
