e36 328 gearbox issues

dear forumers, i bought a 97 328 for my son n discoveredthat there were some issues with d gearbox. D gb specialist says after overhauling d gb that d old gb was from a 318. the slipping betw 2nd n 3rd gear is still obvious after overhaul. Does anyone know if d 318 n 328 share d same gb, gb ecu n gear ratios? any advice will b appreciated.
 
328 can't use 318 box ... both could carry the same manufacturers name which would be GM for the 4 sp and ZF for the 5 sp ...
 
thk u iceman. D gb specialist said d old gb was a 318`s which does not make any sense. Thats why after rebuiding, d proble still persist. Something abt d gear ratios being different betw 318 n 328. Mayb he is trying 2 bs me, i dont know. d cost of rebuilding was 2 b rm2800, which i thought was reasonable. He is now trying 2 source 4 an ori 328 gb. Cost is not yet discussed. car has been with him 9 days.
 
RX8 ...there is no way a 4 potter GB would be able to take up the torque from the 6 potter 328 .... the box will not work and the command from the ecu will show a fault code ... the plug in connectors too is not the same ...318 has got 9 or 12 pins and the other have 14~16 pins ..if not mistaken ...

Sounds fishy. If the mech already knows it's a 318 gearbox he should have stopped work and informed you right away.
 
Sorry could not post earlier.i think d forum server was down. Thk u loafer 4 yr feed bak n advice. Also thks 2 iceman. D saga continues. Options available; a) convert 2 manual cost 6k. b) buy over an old auto gb n take over gb ecu n gear ratiocost approx 4.5k. c) take my car back n tell d mechanic 2 f.o. Option c is not yet on d cards as i want 2 give him d benefit of d doubt. It has been close 2 wks n i want d car bak. Loafer posted d gear ratios on d other forum that states that d gear ratios 4 d 318 n 328 r d same. V can therefore conclude that both d 318 n 328 share d same gear box.Only d gb ecu is different. Will post my next course. BTW do i need 2 intro myself? Thks again loafer n iceman.
 
No worries K.C. I would think that an overhauled gearbox will NOT slip anymore but in your case the problem is really weird.

Another thing that just came to my mind is the torque converter. I'm not sure what goes on when a gearbox overhaul is performed but those who are more familiar can comment if anything is done on the torque converter or not. A faulty torque converter can cause gear slippage as well.

Bro,

Just wanna ask, does the GB slip if the flywheel oil seal is leaking? What't the effect if the flywheel oil seal is leaking?

Well, the torque converter too needs a rebuild as the oil in the converter will have metal particles from the damaged gearbox. If nothing is done to the converter, metal particles will contaminate the new oil thus tremendously reducing the lifespan of the rebuilt gearbox.

If manual very high possibility but auto no no. Your engine oil will reduce over time depending how bad is your leak. A dirty oily bell housing and an oily floor.
 
tork conv also checked n confirmed no problem. 318 n 328 1st to 4th gear d same. final drive not d same n giving problems. Will finalise decision tmr on whether 2 go manual or taking over a used 328 gb.
