dear geeks, before going further how about sharing more details about your budget. that way, we can work it backwords from there.

1994 E36 318 is too old now, need major work, Waja worse.

try for a later year, from 1997 onwards.

actually, i have noted that 328 maintenance is lower than 318 as the components are "stronger".

salary? depend on what else you spend on, wife, kids, girlfriends etc.

set aside 1000 per month in the bank for these expenses. that what i have been doing, so far no surprises for my 328 1997.

Old Waja and even older E36 semua makan duit!! Best of all for budget below RM30K is to buy an old Camry or Cefiro they are great car and replacement engine cost only 2K plus GB cost 1.5K only...

my good friend 3 year old Waja with 50,000 Km had a BENT CRANKSHAFT and runs like a washing machine

my previous car....

1990 BMW 525i with 165,000kms runs smoothly
1990 BMW 735i with 200,000km runs smoothly
1989 merch 300ce (sold to a friend) with 190,000 kms run smoothly when I sold it 7 years ago
1985 Porch 944 with 180km was still running smoothly when I sold it 5 years ago.
... my toyota with 300,000km was STILL Running smoothly when I sold it off at 10 years old

... so GO AHEAD BUY THE PROTON...

no offence bro, but i disagree...i got a honda accord sv4 in december last year for 27k, best decision ever :top:

trust me, a camry will NEVER break down on you but you will be bored to tears whereas an accord may have issues from time to time but i strongly feel that in terms of dynamics, hondas are a poor man's bmw

i could've gotten an E34 for the money, which is actually what i was planning on doing but if you want to keep maintenance costs low, go japanese

comparing E36 to Waja.. please la. if you have to ask, i doubt you know much what you're asking. buy any of the Proton used M cars (ori Satria, Putra,Wira) instead - maintenance not at all an issue.

All I can say Waja is a bad choice.. every other week, u need to replace headlight bulb. Every 6 monthly, u need to replace power window cable. Every other year, u need to replace door handles.. :D

i would spend 5-600 for the car, because, i would use the car when balik kampung or going for outstation..

waja really worst, i dont want to take a risk because i know waja's major problems.. i would think that e36 is more comfortable and i dont find any major problem so far..some opinion said, e36 maintenance cost is average..

toyota camry like orang tua style... cefiro too much curve design... huhu...

huhu.. never buy proton eh..

please, understand my question.. i asking about the maintenance cost, not the value nor the quality.. because waja 2001.. already 9 years, bmw e36 1994?... 16years.. both of it used car, i already done some researched through forum, sites.. waja's having such a problem that keeps occur even we repair it... and e36, so far i did not find any major problem,.. but the maintenance might be high on certain parts... but it will last longer, that would be fine...

All I can say Waja is a bad choice.. every other week, u need to replace headlight bulb. Every 6 monthly, u need to replace power window cable. Every other year, u need to replace door handles..

see.. i already thought that... but the power window had a aftermarket product, made from metal.. from China, if not mistake.. price very cheap, but we have to install it ourselves, door handle broke if everyday exposed to sun, heat..

hey geeks, understand your predicament and fully appreciate also your understanding of whats in store. bottom line is this, its all about quality and affordability which i really think the E36 is the choice option. do note however that alot of factors are in play.ie. the condition of the car handled by the previous owner. note also that the model you are looking into is of some years and requires more care than a brand new car. passion and patience may be required under such circumstances.

do join us for teh tarik session this friday to find out more from the regular sifu's.

cheers!

bro.. why 318? better go for 325.. a lot of different to compare both.. and waja is not a good car.. because i have 1.. and tht waja also i clone it to evo.. huhu

i would say scout around for the e36 as case if you're lucky then you may be able to find a 318 manual for mere rm 20~30K ...then comes maintainance whereby you no need to worry much for the autobox problem and that leaves you with the engine wear and tear ... m40 / m43 engine wear and tear would cost you somewhere around rm3 K for the start ...then comes in the others etc such as suspensions , lower arms , stearing rack which may set you another 3K ...

optional items would be bodykit . larger wheel , coilover, paint work ...but thats optional as you may do it when your piggy bank fills up or perhaps strike 4D and so on ...

so if with an initial budget of rm30 K then i would say go for a E36 ... otherwise stick on to the other brands possible ...

if you'er the type that's looking for power, then opt to an 325 or 328 ...

actually.. im looking for the quality and comfortability.. yerp, i also heard from another friend that, better drive an e36 rather v6.. he claim that, the v6's gearbox always got a problem..

im not really lucky enough, because need to check the wear and tear part...
also my plan is to check the piston and block.. because the engine oil need to top up every 1k.. need to prepare a budget to overcome this..

the specialist in usj said, need to prepare 4k to change the related part.. but i dont think its too expensive though.. 2-3k is enough i think..

I own a 2001 Waja(driven by my wife) and a 1995 325i.

The E36 is sooooooooooo much better.

If u just want to get from A to B then get the Waja.

If u want to enjoy driving, the definitely get a e36.

U can get decent E36 cars for RM30k. Just set aside RM5-10k when u get the car to do it up and replace whatever needs replacing. Thereafter if u r lucky, ur yearly expenses shouldnt cost more than RM5k.

Get a E36 if u can afford it. U wont regret it.

thanks anxious.. your advice.. till now feel very satisfied with my choice eventhough many of my friends keep asking about the maintenance cost and fuel consumptions..

i think that the fuel consumptions is based on how we drive..

why ask for a waja here ?? wasting time deliberating on it...

better off with a bmw...you want, you buy it.. you love it till the day you sell it/give it away...

dun think about the money.. think of the 'joy'....

Bro, I am driving a 318i manual. Yes, spare parts will be expensive than proton and most japanese cars. Mostly for autos, the auto gearbox is mainly the culprit due to the age of the car, which is expensive to fix, manual is more cheaper.

The 318i has less electronics compared to 325, 328. The parts cost less. The 318i has no vanos or ASC and is a 4 cylinder engine, lesser sensors. On a full tank I can get 550-600km on my car. I believe maintaining a 318i is not as much as costly as you might think compared to an accord or camry. Also depends upon how the previous owner kept the car; how well maintained was it.

The grip/traction of the car on the road especially during high speed turns, you can only feel when you drive a bmw. I believe its a safer car compared to waja. E36 suspensions, shocks, brakes all are are better compared to proton cars.

Just my two cents:
When you buy an E36 around 30k, set aside 5k+ for maintenance and repairs. After that your yearly expenditure on maintenance of the car should not be that much.

When I calculate my expenditure, it cost me around 2k+ for repair costs after I got my car.

so basically need 35k to be on safe side...i see,thz for the advice coz oso looking either E36 or E34,wakaka...
