e34 auto trans ATF

hi all...wanna get an idea from u guys. my friend's e34 (m50b20) 4 speeed auto never change the aft since his ownership passed 3+ years.... since he bought it, he got a jerking/kicking on the first gear. other thn tht ots ok.now thinking of replacing the filter and atf, will there be any isuue, ????? some says, better overhoul it because it will(may) spoil when new atf(thiner thn the old) run in. i myself got an experiance with 4g91. pls advice.....

change the oil and filter.why need to overhaul when when we have not even tried changing the oil and filter?a fren bought the same car where the gear was slipping when starting to move.it turned out that the fluid level was low.i think he change the oil and till today still good.this was about 2 years ago
