Dear Fellow Bimmers,I would like to seek advice from our sifus out there regarding numerous issues with my e34 (1995 - Vanos 24v) which had been a joy to ride until recently. On early December 2006 I sent my e34 for an oil chance. The foreman mentioned that the black oil is leaking and therefore chance the oil gaskets and oil rings in 3 places including the a tube connecting to the Vanos. He also took his own liberty to use Esso lube 10w - 40w (semisyn) as he didn't have any other lubes at that moment. One day later, the performance of the car decreased almost to zero, in which if the car were to start from a stationary position (ie. while at traffic light) it struggles to move, unless, i rem the accelerator to max, but I was also able to hear "popping" burst noise coming from under the combustion engine (I purposely tried hitting the accelerator to max while the gear was at neutral, and I could hear and feel the wind effect coming from under the car resulting from the "popping" bursts). You can surely imagine what horror I had to go through during the rush hour that day!! And, by the time I got home, the Air Bag signal was showing. The gear also started to give a strange problem, when the speed reaches 30kph it stays stagnant and the rpm moves to higher than 3000 and I also experienced freeplay!!Next day, I sent the car back to the foreman and told him what had happened. He tested the car and said that the geabox needed overhaul. The gearbox needed overhoul anyway, so, I sent the car to a Gearbox Specialist.Three days later, the gears felt better and smooth, but the performance issue remained. So, I took the car back to the foreman who changed the lube and he mentioned the Air Mass Ctrler (AMC) was at fault and requested me to change it. I told him to hold the horses and went back to the Gearbox Specialist for more advise and he mentioned that the AMC was not at fault as he has already tested it. So, I left the car with Gearbox Specialist for 2 more days. Great guy, worked through the New Year's day and fixed the issue; a broken Main Pulley Sensor. The car's performance was back to normal with increased power due to newly overhauled gearbox. But, the gear shift issue got worse, in which if the speed is between 30 - 40 kph the gear would not shift and RPM goes beyong 3000. So, he changed the gear sensor switch, but the problem still remain. Now, the Gearbox Specialist recommends to change the geabox computer box (located near the glove compartment), which I have not done as yet. Furthermore, I have a new issue pulak, water level in radiator now need to be topped up on daily basis (about half a litre everyday)!!!Any recommendations/views from our sifus out there will be greatly appreciated.Regards____________________________________________There's No Work without Hope & No Hope without Work.Other rides:E46PV6

Hi vanan, on the water issues, this has been discussed in some of the threads... just gotta search....

However, I too had my fair share of water woes with my SLOTH,. I started with:

1. Checking of all hoses and I mean all hoses, even those "hidden" ones, not forgetting the heater matrix inside the car (if yours have not been bypassed). Of course if not in condition, change them. Cost me a bomb though.

2. Check for other obvious leaks, water pump can weep some water too....

3. Check the damn radiator, especially the plastic expansion tank. Plastic parts very prone to crack and leaks. If got small leak, better change. I had a small crack in the plastic tank... changed the radiator. Cost me $$$$ too. Oh, do not forget the radiator cap too, if it has not been changed. Cost small $$$$.:D

4. In my case, I still suffered water loss even after 1, 2 and 3 above. No choice, had to do a compression test... damn, found head gasket gone perhaps due to overheating incident by previous owner. Did top-end overhaul and skimmed the head. Major $$$$.

5. So after all that $$$$, I only need to top up very little water every few months.

6. If you still suffer water loss after all that, time to change car.... just kidding.:D

Thank you Flash. Yesterday, I have replaced the radiator with a BEHR radiator at M-Roadster in Pandan Indah. A little pricier than other workshops but I trust their workmanship for peace of mind.

I also discovered that changing of the gear sensor switch by the gearbox specialist didn't really work, just waste of money as it wasn't cheap. And according to the guys at M-Roadster the gear slip issue is caused "gear valve housing" (i am not sure if it got the specs right). I am quite disappointed with the gearbox specialist who couldn't narrow down the problem despite being a specialist and made me change wrong components. And if that wasn't enough, he even requested me to change the gearbox controller unit (computer box).

I wonder if anyone could give me an advise regarding the gear issue as I am getting very confused now.

Regards

I was informed by the workshop that the Valve Body need changing/repairing. Does anyone know how much this should cost?
