hi all......Everytime i'm engaging reverse gear there's a "chdak" sound from gearbox. the sound become worse if the rpm nearly 1k. today i jusy simply rev to 1.5k rpm and try to engage... my god, its like i didnt press the clutch at all. even there's the same sound when i engage to other gear while driving (fully press the clutch) but not worse. when i check with the BMW mech at my kampung, he said its normal for e30. do other e30 driver face this problem? care to share.......

hey datsunnismo
It happens to me as well. but if I engage it more cautiously it's ok..mine doesn't seem to have anything to do with the tacho readings. As for it being normal, I don't tink so...other E30's i tried did not have this problem too..anyways, we'll wait for the sifu's to clarify this =)

can't do remote diagnose... perhaps you should come join for TT to let the sifus have a listen...

yup.. tht wht i supposed to do bro fabianyee. not only for this gear problem, but for other also.
so far i came for only one tt which was mid of 2008. tht also came late.... hope i'll join u guy next time. and hope sifu's will test my problematic e30 and advice wht to do to make it a nice car to drive.. hehehehehee

congrats !!!! ha ha ha (joking) .... anyway sifu fab can tell u more... for sure ur gearbox has problem, coz normally when engaged reverse gear won't give u tat sound :)

either syncromesh or the fork problem...

but usually it's the oil or the shifter rubber bearings gone..

must come to a complete stop and no rev
then change the gear, then no sound... I hope!

syncromesh ..

Try stopping for 4-5 seconds before engaging reverse gear ...
No rev.

try slotting into 1st gear before slotting into rev... I do that all the time.. ;)

The owners manual for E30 states that for the 1.8 M40, you have to have the car completely still, then push in the clutch for 2-3 seconds, then only shift into reverse. I believe this is because the Getrag 240 does not have a syncro for reverse?

Anyway I have to do the same on my M40. And I also practice the same method as fabian mentioned above of slotting into 1st, then back to neutral and then to reverse. That helps to smoothen it. Makes 3 point turns a bitch tho, especially if people are waiting for you. :D

tried bro fab method this morning everytime i reverse. no sound at all. happy!!!! thanks to all. hope no more sound. :)

hi

Am also a new owner of a m40 e30, having some question on my gear box, engaging to reverse would be a bit tight and then when disengaging back to neutral there will be a loud cluck and also when driving it sound a bit ruff when the car is draging on its gear, during cruising when the accelerator is off or slightly off, sound like arh arh arh.

any suggestion,gear oil recently change.

Thanks

come to next TT to have the sifus have a listen... Otherwise, go to the mechanic...
based on your 'brief' description, it can also be the rear diff...

sure will, when will it be, is there any recomendation on work shop too....

Thanks

Next TT should be on the 2nd Friday of January... Which is 8 Jan 2010...

As for workshop, any competent workshop should be able to diagnose.. There are 2 workshops I go to in Puchong Perdana... If you're around the area, can go try them out... Btw, they are not BMW specialists..

If pumping the clutch pedal solves the problem then it is almost certain that your clutch pump circuit (hydraulic circuit that is) is leaking. Your pumping action pumps more fluid to the slave cylinder to overcome the pressure loss from the leak. My guess is that your clutch slave cylinder is not pushing the release arm to it's full travel causing the gears to crash. By the way crash engaging the gears is a technique long forgotten due to the advent of synchromesh.

So, I would definitely advise you to get your clutch circuit fixed. A new clutch master pump, hose and slave cyclinder repair kit will not cost you more than a few hundred ringgit. My clutch return hose to the reservoir broke due to old age recently. I bought the hose (RM30/meter) at Bavarian Auto and decided to also change my clutch master pump (cannot remember the price). Completed the job myself in about 4 hours.

refer to attachment figure, items 1 -clutch master pump, 13 slave pump/cylinder, 19 flexible braided metal hose or high pressure hose.

Hope this helps

Didn't read anyone mentioned about pumping the clutch pedal... Please quote the post on clutch pumping.

Thanks fabian

A Bmw specialist is not necessary, only required a mechanic that can do the job right....... the place you suggest is far from my place.

Any other can suggest, where would be the TT be.

cheers

Sorry guys I must have misread the quoted post. Datsunismo, the method of pressing the clutch pedal for 2 to 3 seconds is perfectly normal for cars without synchromesh. Nothing further inspection of your clutch system is needed. Apologies to everyone.
